  • Bleeding breaks

I have just replaced the brakes on my surf. Only problem was, the first front wheel I took off, I assumed you had to unbolt the caliper housing. Wooooooooooops

    fluid flying everywhere.

I have cleaned it all up, bled the vaves through all around and filled the resevoir back up.

should their still be a bit of sponge in the breaks??

Have I done any damage to the caliper housing?? I've tightened it back up and their doesn't seem to be any leaks.............

    can anyone help??

    thanks..............

      Hi,
I am very concerned with the above comment "I assumed you had to unbolt the calliper housing" , I hope you didnt split the caliper into two halves, cause they are a "factory fit" definately NOT for splitting outside the manufacturers' premises. Yes, it is possible to fit new seals and pistons to calipers but your description suggests u need to be careful ie DO NOT TAKE VEHICLE ON ROAD, if you have taken the caliper itself apart. Get expert advice, hope you have Home call out not just Recovery like me !
Please advise of the situation....If I am "jumping the gun" then I apologise, but brakes are only safe if operating well...

Four bolts on the back of the caliper housing...... I losened all four off. fluid started seeping from the bottom so I tightened it back up and bled them through. doesn't seem to be leaking now......

Breaks are well snappy compared to how they used to be.

        Hope its ok

did not actually split it in two halves. I reallised by time the fluid started that I shouldn't go any further.........

please let me know if it's ok

        Many thanks

If it not leaking its probably OK, keep an eye on it. The two halves are machined to seal without gaskets or seals, so its not recommended you split them to avoid problems getting them to seal again.

But if you brakes are OK, and you see no signs of leaks after few days, you'll be OK.

If I remember, there is a small rubber 'O' ring or two between the two halves. They sit in machined rebates.

Even better then! As long as you havn't pinched the o-ring!

Checked it thismorning and their is a tiny lump of fluid on the bottom inside of the wheel. (About the size of your tiny finger nail.) assume it is the caliper. How much does it cost to replace one and how do you do it???

Yes. The kit consists of new rubber gaitors and clips to cover the calipers and new rubber seals. The rubber seals are probbably okay- I found my gaiters and clips were shot- mud and water on the piston side.
