  • Wheel bearings

    Hi All,

The old girl just failed her MOT, needs new front break pads and they say there is excessive movement in offside and nearside front wheel bearings.

I asked the chap who rang with the bad news if he thought it would be expensive to do the bearings. He rekons that they can probably just be tightned up.

    Does this sound right ?

I've had the truck now almost two years and "I've" never had the wheel bearings replaced - should I just get them to replace them and be done with it?

If I should be replacing them, any suggestions on where I should source them from ?
I seem to remember reading somthing about Millners bearings being faulty.

    Thanks everybody,
    Joe

The bearings usually can be tightened up, if they go loose again quickly, them pull the hub apart and check the races for damage/wear and replace if needed.

I'd tighten them up for now, and see what they are like in a few months. Unless you have time and inclination to strip and inspect them now.

We had issues with Milners rear bearings, their fronts I've fitted in the past seem OK, but I don't shop there much now, so can't say if things have changed.

Many thanks for the quick reply.

As you suggest, I'll leave them alone and check in a couple of months.

      Thanks,
      Joe

Might seem like a silly question, but how do you tighten the front bearings?

They are taper bearings, so you just need a 54mm socket.

Is there a recommended amount of tightness for the nut?

                    ah,

Do the nut up to 43ft/lb, spin the disc, loosen nut, retighten to 18ft/lb, check the preload with a spring balance on a wheel stud, should be 2.9-5.7 kg's to start the disc turning.
Install new/straightened lock washer, install the lock nut and torque to 35ft/lb, then check the preload again.

                    Arn't you glad you asked?

Or hammer the nut with a screwdriver till the disc has no wobble, but spins OK, put on lock nut and tighten the same way, fold over lock washer and go down the pub.

BTW, don't try it with your truck, it won't work, IFS 2nd Gen trucks only!!!!
