  • Engine cutting out

I have a 3rd gen hilux surf 3.0 the problem I have just recently been having is when starting the car up then switching on head lights(main beam) not side lights the car cuts out but it doesnt happen all of the time could it be a dodgy switch or bad connection can anybody give me any advise?

Sounds like Batteries are knacked or your alternator is not putting out a charge. Stick a volt meter across the batteries whist the engine is running and it should read around 15V. Then report.

p.s If your truck is cranking over fine like you say then it could be a loose earth..

      Hi Andy

Had Battery checked out and i was told that the battery was ok but the alternator was reading around 12v so i think alternator may be nacked.
I have been told to spray some wd40 on alternator this may cure the problem.

If the alternator is knackered then WD40 won't cure it. You will probably either need to get it repaired or get a new/exchange one. Take it to a proper auto electrician to get it checked.
