  • Rough when Idling - Engine Mounts?

    Hi all

Noticed my 3.0 1995 SSRG is quite loud when idling.

Its super smooth when you get above 1500rpms or so, but it clatters pretty loudly when its ticking over. Is this fairly common and do most Surfs idle loudly??

Is there anything easy I can do to dampen this down - sounds like my dads Massey Ferguson 35 at the moment! I did a quick search and someone mentioned engine mounts may be loose or need replacing.

Is there another way that only involves grease or something easy??? LOL

Any advice to put my mind at rest would be cool.

    Cheers
    Dan

hmmm, i too get a fair amount of vibration at idle, but how much is "normal"? i usually hit the idle up switch if its sitting in the drive, that settles it down a treat..i'm thinking i recall reading somewhere about some surfers putting rubber under their bonnets to cut down on "idle clatter", which would suggest the problem isn't unique..in fact, the first surf i test drove, i actually rejected due to the rattle it made, the one i did buy was quieter, for about a week..one thing i get with mine is the air filter bouncing around in the housing. usually i just lift the lid, tweak the filter around a bit, then she's fine for a few weeks...i think the options are to spend many frustrating hours trying to nail it, or live with it, it could drive you to distraction..

As i said in the other post in reply to Tony N, I'll live with it as a perfectly normal diesel engine characteristic if its nothing mechanical to worry about - besides, if its idling that long I may as well turn it off and stop wasting fuel - that'll sort it out!

Seems to be fairly normal, so at least i know my Surf ain't sick
