Loose Steering

i wonder if any one can help when driving the steering feel as if it has a lot of play on it,it also has a bit of a rattle on it.I have checked all the bushes and all seem fine.the steering seems to work ok, does anybody have an idea what could be causing this as it seems to be getting worse and MOT is aproaching

Hi,
The steering system is fairly simple rack and pinion.....only a few places to check....Firstly, this rattle, is that a noise you can hear from driving seat ? If so is it coming from the steering column ? You say you have checked all the bushes, did this include the tie rod ends with a pry bar ? and the rack mounting bushes?... and the steering shaft couplings ? If you have checked all these, fine, so where's the "play" coming from ? If you havent checked all these, the mot examiner will and you will then discover what needs sorted...However, if you "get in first" you could isolate / source the problem, sort it, and have a smug look on your face.....I have deliberately not touched on the power steering system, your description makes this sound more basic snag than that...hope its doesn't need a new rack...gud luk..
