  • Newby needs help!!!!

I have just bought a 1996 3.0l auoto surf (warranted
56500 mls) and i tink i've got a problem with bearings
    (i dont know which ones) when i reach 40mph + i hear a
whirr, grrrr or what ever you would call it, i did get
worried cos i thought it could be the gear box but a
friend told me to put it in neutral and free wheel
down hill and see if its still there,it was so does
this mean its not the box? its really not that noisy but i want to nip it in the bud but where do i start?

Could be the bearings, but if you can't tell by jacking it up and wiggling the wheels, you'll just have to change them and hope for the best. Other than that it could be the tyres, try swapping them round and see if the noise moves, and make sure they are all the same pressure.

Try it in the different 4x4 modes and see if the noise changes.

Bearing noises sometimes stop when you cover the brakes slighlty, and make sure all the diff oil levels are OK, and grease the UJ's.

Lastly, make sure its not a peice of trim loose and flapping.

      Thank's Tony,
I dont think its the tyres, the noise is comming from the front though, so i change the front wheel bearings and are there any others it could be? (well i say the front but you can feel a very slight vibration under your feet)

get someone to check the bolts that hold the brake calipers, had the same prob on mine as i found last week when doing 35mph came to a sudden halt. luckely i was ok, so i would get them checked.
