  • Full synth oil

    Hey all,
I'm about to embark on an oil change on my 3.0 and I have been told by several people that fully synthetic oil (5w/40) is the best oil for larger TD engines.

Is this o.k or do I need a specific type of oil...???

synthetic is the best, but since its only in there for 5000 km, and they aint exactly race cars do you need the best? if it was one of these new fangled common rail things with a 18000 mile intervals, its the way forward, but i am using good old mineral... cos i'm a cheapskate.
    it's in me shed, mate.

use 10w/40 [semi-synthetic] its good enough and cheaper. Seeing the oil changes are more frequent why waste your money!!

I use the stuff my brother lets me have for £5.50 for 7.5L. Thats cheapo 10W/50 and is sold to garages for use in petrols and diesels. It's only there for 5K Kms.
          .
          .
          .
A question for the mechanically minded. What is different about these diesel engines with the huge service intervals? Is it to do with the filters?
          It's only a hobby!

don't know how often truck have their oil changed cos they go in for a check every 6 weeks, but the oil only gets changed on a service.

brand new they change the oil at 7000 miles, but after that it just seems to be every 6 months... so that's about 30,000 miles.

                they're like, 11-16litre engines

Trucks yeah after 6K they have oil changed because from new they are filled with running-in oil then every 21K...but thats how I get full-synth oil...cos it's recommended for trucks and it was a fitter for Merc that told me full-synth for larger TD's.

Because of the price of fully synthetic oil, he just drives slower to save money on fuel.

Two years is way to long between oil changes regardles of mileage, a portion of your oil is designed to evaporate to protect the upper engine from corrosion and all but the very best synthetics are prone to oxidation and are slightly hydroscopic. So oil change every 6 months to a year for low miles depending on quality of oil.

For refrence I change mine every 3 months or so at roughly 6,000 mile 10,000Km intervals with no sign of ill effects, using mid priced oil. I've used the same rutine on other cars and put 1/4million miles on two with the engine still passing MOT emmisions even when evrything else was knackerd.

                          Synth or not

A fully synthetic motor oil is reckoned to be in better condition after 100,000 miles than your average mineral oil is after a few thousand. If you go fully synthetic I would see no real need to change every 5 thousand, I reckon you could safely double or even treble the interval

I might be wrong but I read it from another forum that full syn is too thin for older engine with some a fair amount of wear in it.
