  • Clunky Auto

    Hi all,

First post as I am just starting to look for a Surf.

Can anyone help? Just been to see my first Surf, 97 Gen 3, with 79,000 miles, all seems pretty genuine but the Auto box seemed very clunky when first engaged, particularly in reverse, is this normal or a sign of something worse about to happen?

    Thanks

I would advise drive a few more then compare drivability, condition etc

          Clunky? need more details...

If under drive then the box should go smoothly through its gearing.

My 2nd gen 3.0L always seems a bit "clunky" when you change from P to D with the engine & gearbox cold. As was said earlier, try testing a few more but as long as it's smooth when moving there should not be a problem. Anyway, if you're buying from a dealer you've got a minimum 3 months warranty by law (whatever the dealer may suggest) and if it goes wrong the dealer would have to repair it as the vehilce would not be fit for the purpose intended.

If it has any UNSEEN problems after the warranty is up, you've got a WIZZARD mechanic in TonyN not too far away and he could work his MAGIC on it!!

On the move the gear changes were nice and slurry with no nasty noises or whistles, but when moving into reverse there was a bit of a jolt, the box was cold as we had only done a mile or two.
I am not really used to auto's, I have driven CVT's (hated it and sold it on as soon as possible) and a newish Hyundai Santa Fe with a Tiptronic box (absolutely brilliant, only new it changed gear because the number on the dashboard changed and the tiptronic was really smooth) so don't really have a bench mark.
I know I should try a few but this one seems to be a genuine milaeage and probably there for the taking at a little over 6k and is generally tidy.

You always get a lurch when going into D or R from N, it cos the motor makes lots of torque at tickover!

                  Thanks all,

Tony N, that was what I was hoping.

Might be joining you all in Surf ownership soon!

A few Disc World fans on the forum I guess !!

Definitely, read the whole lot including the "Science of" series (waiting for vol III to come out in paperback) and the Digger/Truckers/Wings series, especially since a guy I used to work with in Wells lived just around the corner from TP. Disc World is brilliant.
