  • 4WD Dont work!! GUTTED!!!

Hi to all Smufers out there.I got a problem that probably has been posted already 'but here goes. I purchased my 1994 3.0 SSRX in March..Its my 1st 4x4 & I been lovin it scaring the socks off kids in chuffin Hondas. Anyhoo..Time comes to go to my 1st 4x4 funday in 9 acres of rough stuff near Milton Kenes. I get there and blow me !! Dismayed I press my 4wd button & NOTHING happens!!!
NO LIGHT ON the Dash..and deffinately no front diff action..
I checked itall worked b4 I bought the beast ..All I have done is fitted a stereo & had an Alarm installed. I'm fairly sure it's an elctrical fault..
Anyone with some pointers for me..
I wanna go play in some mud!!

    Thanks in advance..
    Jason...

I had exactly the same problem. On day, driving along and the road's a bit slippy, switch to 4WD mode I thought, and nothing happened.

It turns out that the flipping 4WD selector switch in the transfer cage shifter is playing silly gits. After squirting in some switch cleaner and frantically pushing the switch 100000 times, it all of a sudden started working.

Have a look at the two attachments - they may help you solve the problem but it may be something simple like a loose connection or dirty switch.

I had this problem, in my case the ham-fisted idiot who fitted the stereo smashed the 4x4 relay which is a small black box mounted behind the panel between the center console and oddments box/stereo so I'd check this is OK and the conector (14 wires-white) is well pushed in.

did you try driving along for a bit to see if it then selected?... sometimes it takes a bit for it to "connect" cos it has to all get lined up first.
try backwards and forwards then a bit of steering left to right and see if that works?

It might even be the selection switch or the wires going to it..
On mine one of the wires had come off, probably due to the last idiot owner not knowing how it came off.
I resoldered them with longer wires and hey presto it worked.
I always work better wet .

Its why I became a plumber!!!

              Hi Jay here..
i have checked under the dash for losse wires etc.. Your attachments are v handy.. i am waiting for a tech manual in post.. I dont suppose your manual tells the precise location of the fuse shown on your diagram... I havnt found 1 labelled A.D.D. or 4wd..
I got a good vaccum feed to VSV solenoids..The switch on stick buzzes out ok.. I still stumped?????

According to an Autodata CD I have the 4wd ADDS fuse should be fuse F3 located in the fusebox at the R/H side of the drivers footwell. It is also marked as being for the cruise control and alarm system if fitted.

Ripped dash 2 pieces.. No fuse marked cruise control or alarm(i got alarm fitted after import)..
The A.D.D relay is the 1 i gotta find.. gonna start chasing for voltage from the switch ???????

Lokk again at the ADDS diagram - the ADDS relay is located in the centre of the dash around the area behind the stereo.

The fuse, (according to Autodata) is the top L/H fuse in the fusebox at the R/H side of the drivers footwell

i know you all been patient with me.. the saga continues.I have traced 12v feed to 4wd switch..the switch works fine too.. Also have traced 12v feed to the BROWN A.D.D solenoid.. It clicks & emmits a small hiss when I pull the plug off it with engine running. With 4wd switch pressed no feed is present on thr other BLUE solenoid..It remains on the BROWN one.I have had the dash in bits..I cannot find an ADDS relay.. Only a unit marked 4wd control computer...Strange thing is I still get 12v on the brown solenoid with this unit unplugged... Is there another ralay in there that i am just too thick too find?????? I had stereo out is anything behind the heating system

See the attachements below for the location of the ADDS relay and fuse locations.
From what you say the fault does appear to be the ADDS relay. The 2wd solenoid will normally be active - the supply to the solenoid doesn't come from the 4wd ECU, but the control signal to the solenoid operating coils does.
Again from the diagram the supply for both the solenoids is from the same fuse (10a gauge fuse - see fuse locations) so if you have a supply to one of them but when you operate the 4wd switch the other one doesn't operate then the relay is the likely suspect.
I know this sounds like hard work but it's sometimes not easy to diagnose faults at long range as it were.
Keep trying, or in the latin - Nil Desperandum

                          NOW I Gettin Somewhere!!

Things gettin better.I found the chuffin ADDS relay that 4 sure..left of steering column under dash as posted. The only thing is "its printed on case as ""fuel pump relay""?? the truck runs fine with it removed... I actualy got to engage 4WD buy shorting the contacts on the relay plug(front drive shaft couldt be turned by hand) Shorted the opposing contact & all was free again.
One thing I noted was even with 4WD engaged..No dash light came on..Maybe cos relay was missing??
The relay aint getting a ground connection to feed it.. I tested the ground connection to the swith(as shown on attach ment).Any 1 got a wiring diagram i could look at... I'm sooo close to this 1 !!
