Service kit for starter

I'm having problems starting my 'L' plate 3.0TD on some days. I can hear the solenoid clicking, but it takes several turns of the key before the starter turns, and sometimes it doesn't turn long enough for the engine to fire.

Someone said I need the service kit for the starter. Does anyone know what the Toyota part number is, what it contains, and how difficult a job it is? A description of what is involved / how to sort this out would be brilliant! Cheers!

It took me about an hour as I had to go buy a few extensions for my socket set as its a bit tricky to get to and a bit tricky to get the starter out the body, fixing it is really easy.

Have just ordered the kit from Roughtrax. All I need to do now is wait for it to stop raining so I can get under the truck!!

I would also replace the plunger, which doesn't look like it comes with the kit you have ordered.

Alll the parts can be obtained from Toyota.

There's a tutorial which I did when changing mine, which jim kindly converted to .pdf files.

fixed the stater today with the kit from toyota (£32) it was very easy after 2 hours trying to get the unit from out of the car i found i could not so i replaced the parts while it was hanging down, thank to the site it saved me about £70 as i was quoted around £100 to have it fixed.

Good on ya Colin....its easy once you scrape the skin of your fingers trying to remove the starter motor from out the engine bay. See you wen the sensible route of leaving it hanging

I did it last weekend and had to take out the fuel filter to get the thing out of the engine bay. I too have the scraped hands and arms but at least now I dont have the embarrassment of sitting at the garage after filling up going 'click - click - click - click - click' for five minutes with a big queue behind me!

Hi Paul, Change your settings to show what vehicle model you have etc...will help in the future.

if you look at the sticky section you'll find info on parts etc....Several of us just walked into the local Toyoyta Garage with the Vin Plate info and they were able to source the parts from the EPC Disks [info on the sticky and prices at the time], Or you could try roughtrax www.toyotahilux.com or milners www.milneroffroad.com If you look back through this thread fieldsy created a document that shows you what you need to do.


PS. If your on the 3.0LTD you will have to take the Starter Motor up through the engine bay after unbolting the Fuel Filter from the engine bulkhead [leave the pipes attached!!]

Replaced the parts today , did it with it hanging as suggested but still have the click problem

have to go back in again and check the connetions are tight i guess- what a pain!

any ideas whats wrong?, eg what happens if the contacts
are round the wrong way?
