  • Oil leak from the rocker cover gasket.

Further to my on going oil-leak, I tightned up the rocker cover bolts. After a nice drive to work I had a peek and there seems to be oil weeping from all around the gasket now. I know a bit of weeping is probably ok, and a little oil goes a long way, but this does look a bit excessive. It's been fine for over a year and now this, so I'm guessing that perhaps the gasket needs to be replaced ? I suppose gaskets just get old and can fail without this meaning that there is engine doom approching ?

So, assuming that I'm not wasting my time, first question, does anybody know of a good (cheap) place in the UK to source a new gasket from. The usual place I use can't help.

Second, I have a horrible feeling that getting the rocker cover off is more than removing the 10 or so 10mm bolts, disconnecting the air intake hose, and running a knife around the edge to break the seal. Theres a silver coloured cast metal pipe that runs over the top/rear of the cover. Is this going to have to come off as well.. Tho' I don't mind having a go, I'm no machanic, is this a job I want to undertake ???
I've got a fairly good tool kit and don't mind investing in new tools as I need them but am I going to need any "specialist" tools ?

    Thanks,
    Joe.

Its no hassle, the intake pipes go across to the Turbo, and back across to the intake manifold, they're the big pipes you mentioned

You'll get a gasket from Roughtrax or Milners cheap enough.

The rocker cover gasket is either thick rubber or cork, if you overtighen it it'll warp the rocker cover and not seal properly.

      Thanks for the reply Tony.
So does that mean I can get the rocker cover off without removing the intake pipes ?

No, I dont think so, but what I ment was its not a hard job to get the intake pipes off, only clips each end, and they have a couple of bolts holding them on.

They often need cleaning out anyway, as the Crankcase breather can put a lot of oil in them over time.

          Ah.... got ya....

Well Toyota can supply the gasket for £10, everybody else wanted to supply a complete set for around £80 so that's a result.
I'll have a stab at the weekend... heres hopeing.

          Thanks for your help.
