  • Transfer Box

    Hi There Folks

I have a rather annoying clunk and what sounds like a chain running through its links coming from the Transfer Box. It clunks when I change gear. The gearbox also has to be hot before it happens. My mechanic tells me it is something in the Transfer Box. Can anyone give me any clues to this or have had any experience at it. I would appreciate any advice . Thanks for now and have A Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

If it sounds like a chain then it could be the transfer box which is chain driven. Maybe just needs an oil change. If it's hot then that will be when the oil starts to break down especially when it is old. Other than that could be a tooth gone on a dive cog or a stretched chain although I've never heard of that happening on a Toyota Transfer case. Try an oil change first.

    Cheers

      Front Shaft

      Hi There Again

We checked the oil and it seems fine. The noise comes when you turn the front shaft coming out of the transfer box. It makes the old chain sound then and it seems to clunk through to the back shaft. Any more ideas? I hope so. I am getting the feeling that we are going to have to open it up. Thanks for the help..........

Sounds like a bearing has gone inside then. I would say it has to come apart.

I'll have a look in my manual later today and see what else I can come up with.

        Cheers

          Transfer Box

          Hello There........

Thanks very much for the help. I do appreciate it. I will take it apart this week-end with the help of the trusty mechanic . Will Milners do the Parts or do I have to go to Toyota? Just a thought. Thanks again.

            ewan.

think you will need to go to your local Toyota Stealership. Doubt if Milners will do them. However it may be worth a try.

              Hiya guys,

What was the cause of the noise you were getting? I think I am getting the same noise! Its fine under 40 MPH but anything over 40 I get the "rattle" and it gets faster as the surf does! I have had gearbox specialists look over it and say they can here it but havent got a clue what it is?

If it is a bearing it might be worth trying to get a replacement from a bearing factors as they are often loads cheaper than the main dealer ones. I rebuilt a gearbox on a Citroen BX about 10 years ago and the bearings cost half as much from the factors as they would from the dealers. You`ll need the index numbers fromm the bearings which are stamped on them.

Chains, Sprockets, Seals and Bearings will all be standard parts which a bearing supplier will be able to supply. Try somewhere like Wyco or Antifriction, both of whom have branches throughout the country or check your yellow pages. They will probably be a quarter of the price of Toyota and possibly be stock items.

Just realised, why am I replying to a three year old thread?
