  • Squeaky / slipping clutch ?

    Hi

Wonder if anyone could shed some light or offer advice on the following please ?

Just got back from taking the Surf ( 1990 2.4 ) for a run up to Birmingham and back and noticed a squeaky noise whenever I dipped the clutch as if something is dry and needs lubing up ? Also noticed especially in fourth gear after doing a gear change, a few seconds later the rev counter will creep up but the vehicle speed doesn't appear to be increasing, taking my foot off the acelerator, and letting it slow down and then slowly putting my foot on the acelerator seems to be a workaround.

    Anyone seen this before ?

Thanks in advance for any advice

    Regards

The squeaky noise could be something as simple as the clutch pedal pivot point needs oiling. However it could also be the pressure plate springs and the revs rising one sounds like either the clutch is on its way out or there's oil getting on to the plates. It shouldn't be an adjustment problem as the clutch is hydraulic (I think). Maybe someone who's got a clutch could give you an idea of what to look at - only got two pedals meself.

The clutch pivot point is a rubber cactus type so it doesn't squeak. The squeaking is probably the release bearing but the rising engine speed with the road speed not rising means that your clutch is slipping.

You should start thinking about changing the clutch as soon as possible.

Tthanks for the replies, have spoken to a mechanic friend in Bedford who says he will take a look / listen to double check what I think I'm seeing.

          Cheers

Have had a squeaky clutch twice now. None of the other symptoms. Just a really awful juddering, grating, squeaking noise. Starts off being a symptom when engine is hot. gradually becomes a problem every time the clutch is depressed.

Tried spraying clutch lever mechanism with grease etc. Finally tracked it down to clutch actuating lever on side of gearbox. Both times have smeared lever with grease and after working the clutch a few times it has gone away. Last time I removed rubber boot and put quite a bit in there. Seems to only last about a month and then starts squeaking again.

Have used normal hi temp grease. Am thinking about trying copper grease if it happens again.

You have your release bearing moving up and down the shaft okay? The fork moves the bearing and is visible on the outside of the gearbox at the slave cylinder. On the inside end of the fork, it is held onto the release bearing by a spring clip which, as the fork throws the bearing forward, grinds on the back of the fork.

You'll have to live with it if you have it, unless you can get the boot off and surgically spray some grease onto the back of the fork. Gotta be hard to do right coz you dont want grease going the wrong direction in there. I had my box off and was able to lightly lube the input shaft/bearing & spring and the squeaky clutch is gone since.

Pics were surely taken....heres one from inside the bellhousing, you see the spring and the fork but its underneath the fork where it squeaks

Thanks JimL, got a chap hopefully looking at it tomorrow afternoon, if the wife remembers to drive it across to him.
