Heater not working...not good in winter!

The heater is now only blowing out cold air now.

I did some more investigation, and found I had lost over a period of weeks about a quarter of a litre of coolant. I can live with that.

Howwever, coolant is now a muddy brown, and when I started the engine from cold minus the rad cap, lots of littles bubbles appeared on top of the coolant.

Let the engine run for about 10-15 mins, untill coolant started to overflow, but the little bubbles were still there. The heater was still blowing cold air.

The inlet pipe through the fire wall was hot to touch, but when I squeezed the pipes they felt 'crunchy'.

After searching other threads it appears it could be a combination of a blocked matrix (due to pipe linings degrading?) and an air lock (hence small bubbles appearing).

I'm going to flush the matrix through this weekend, but really could do with some advice to steer me in the right direction,as it seems to be displaying several symptoms.

Air locks caused by lack of circulation in my opinion .
Remove hoses and back flush matrix from lower hose through to top hose . You may need to replace heater hoses as the debris may loosed and reblock the matrix . Refill and bleed as in previous threads , use search facility . Then drain and refill , and bleed ,using a flush additive and continue as directed on flushing agent bottle .
Once done drain and refill , and bleed again ,with 33% antifreeze and water .

Crunchy pipes!That means a very poorly maintained cooling system.You will need more than a hose for this.Whole cooling system needs a good clean.If the scale in the cooling system is loosened it will clog radiator and heater cores again.Maybe you should see a radiator and cooling system specialist to see if they do a power flush of the cooling system.

And I would certainly replace the heater pipes. If there is enough scale in there to make them crunchy then the chances are if you flush them they will be pretty hard and dry and will probably leak.

Great, just when things were ok! Do milners do replacement hoses?

Just flushed the heater matrix through. The water came out dark reddy brown for 5 mins!

Up and running fine now, cab very toasty!

Will have to replace the hoses, as a couple of them did seem to be degrading inside.

give the hoses to your mum cos they're great at cleaning stuff!!... i had a dodgy stain on my trousers and the following day they were haning in the cupboard minus the stain!! GREAT!! A+++++ for mums!
