  • Changing head update

I started the head replacement today at mid day, thier are some very awkward bolts and nots that have to come out, which are not mentioned in in the head removal I printed off the group, it says remove the exhaust manifold, but does not mention that the bracket that is bolted to the left hand side and goes down to either side of the oil filter, has to have the top nuts removed and the bottom ones have to be loosened, to get at the bottom ones, you have to remove the wheel, remove the oil filter and have a suitable 3/8 drive knuckle to get one of the bolts out, well 5.5 hours later, had to stop my back was hurting to much....LOL I'm soooo unfit.
all I have to do tomorrow is remove all fuel injection pipes and some other stuff, remove inlet manifold, pully's timing cover, etc, I will keep you informed, I have also taken lots of digital pics and will do a detailed head swap on cd's if anyone would require one.
Will let you know how I get on tomorrow lads

I wouldn't bother with removing the exhaust or inlet manifolds, just undo the bolts and pull them slightly clear. Removing the studs often helps though - you can undo them with I think an 8mm socket (star type not the flat hex type). The worst two bolts are the rear inlet manifold one and the rear exhaust manifold one. Exhaust needs a 14mm ring spanner, inlet one needs a 3/8 inch drive socket, extension and UJ plus some injenuity.

Also be carefull when you undo the bolt that holds the bracket that steadies the aut transmission dipstick, it's easy to drop and then impossible to retrieve unless you are lucky.

    Cheers and good luck

      Head replacement

Nearly done the head change, just got to put all the silly top bits back on, pipe to turbo and all the vac pipes and water pipes, I'm not the fastest of mechanics, but am thorough, double checking and all that.
When sorted and started, like I said, I will do a full detailed head change write up, I did buy a water pump, (not genuine Toyota) but decided not to replace it after I had removed old one one, I did a comparision, and the original was far supperior in design, better impellor for better water flow, so if you have changed your water pump for anything other than a Toyota pump, be aware, that it may not be as efficient, will post an update during the week...
