  • Rear Window Tint

    Hi

My rear window has a tinted film on the inside and is now very rippled.(i guess due to time and the rear window action gioing up and down)
    Is it possible to :

1 Remove the covering (and How)
2 Will this damage the heater element
3 Where sells this stuff and how hard is it to use/fit
4 Will this involve removing the rear screen If so How?????

    Thanks
    Mark

I used a steam wallpaper stripper to heat it up then carefuly pealed it off. dont scrape it or you will damage the heated rear window wire things.2 Will this damage the heater element
        BE gentle, no scraping.

You need to open tailgate & push the 2 catches till they stop then the window will operate. Support the window with a garden chair or similair as the glass is now in a fragile state. Use plenty of soapy water so you can position the new film squeejy the bubbles & water away. Gently file the edges so they dont get caught when winding window up.Thanks

I just peeled mine off and used acetone (or nail varnish remover) to remove the rest of the sticky. Was easy and painless, tho I did get a bit high on the fumes!!2 Will this damage the heater element
            Didnt affect mine

can be done with screen in place

Would just say that whilst I admire your wish to do it yourself I have seen some DIY efforts and they were not that clever. I think its harder than it looks. Good luck!

              Thats it!!

              Thanks Linda
I got the film off with nearly boiling water and only had the stubborn sticky bits to remove..read your answer and now have a clear screen.

P.S. if it looks like bubble wrap then it will come off and will pay for it to be done. But its worth a try

                Don't Bother Trying

I had it all on ,trimmed ,smooth as glass with no bubbles or bits in it(even if i say so myself it looked good) well proud....

Then I noticed the instruction says it takes 5 / 7 days to cure

Bit tricky with the tailgate down and the window hanging out..

Thought I might just get away with and wound it in shut the door and wound up the window.....and it looked as if in its former life the silver tinted sheet had been wrapped around me mums roast on sunday

                oh well

Loads of water and washingup liquid mixed when putting it on, plus do it in the summer in brilliant sunshine, apart from that, make sure all the lubricant is squeezed out when you have put it on you will be surprised how much is left when you think you got it all out, and use a hairdrier on it - not close though. It will help it to dry out and cure.

                    Cheers

                          Thanks Andy

I had no problem getting it on and smooth (as you say LOADS of soapy water)
It was just the curing time caught me out!!

Following the instructions they say to apply the film in the shade and a cool place...I belive this is so you have to buy more rolls till you get a handy hint.

"Apply it in the summmer heat and warm gently to dry.."

Thanks all I will Leave it to the Summer

the name slydog has come up several times, and yet people keep telling of their tales of woe while trying to remove old and fit new window tint.Come on guys, half the time, half the cost and half the aggro admit defeat and get the right man for the job. SLYDOG, how's about a rough idea, for all windows, rear only and rear and rear passengers .thanks chris

HAIRDRYER OR HEATGUN would have helped but you need to take your time with it. THE HORSE HAS BOLTED
