  • Alternator Trouble

Help!!!!! . Due to previous bodge (Before my time) The alternator on my Surf is Vibrating. The garage said that the bushes on the mounting are worn to excess. This I was told can not be fixed and another alternator is reqired. The problem is that they are as rare as rocking horse s*!te. Due to the fact it has the vac pump on the front between the main body and the pulley. Can the car be converted to take the standard alternator or is their someone who can repair or supply another one

Thanks for any help you can give.

    Bushes on the alternator...?

Ok... (or would they rather not get involved...)

I spoke to Sahib's, Hanger Lane... initially he didn't want to get involved. After much discussion, got a second alternator from StreetlugeChris, gave the alternator to Sahib's. They have refurbed it, and put the biggest rotor that would fit, and put a new regulator in to match. Now puts out 95amps instead of a damp 60amps... works a treat.

Alternator is better than new now. If you are going to do this, get some new vanes for the vacuum pump, and swap those out while you are at it... Brakes will feel much better....

Search for some of my other posts, I have detailed the mod there.

I think there is a bush where the main pivot bolt goes through on the bottom.Even if a little worn it may be ok.Make sure the Adjuster Lock Bolt on top of Alternator is not broken. They can snap off and leave the threaded section in the Alternator body.If this is broken then Alternator will start to move around. This happened to mine and only discovered this during Timing Belt change.

        NiftyNev,

Absolutely right. I did have the same thing (snapped adjuster locking bolt), and it was a little bit of a mare to get the remains out of the alternator body. But I do not remember seeing a bush on the main bolt. I ordered two new bolts as adjuster locking bolt being broken/sheared, I thought the other (main mounting bolt) might have been quite stressed. Bolt/nut came complete with no bush... reattached old alternator and it worked as well as it ever did (read didn't - 50 amps wet).

Got it rewound and hey presto...

I'm fairly sure the the alternator body where the main pivot bolt goes through has a steel sleeve/bush that is pressed in and probably not a replacement part.I think it is there just for extra strength as the body of the alternator is alloy.I'm not going to rip it out to check though.Allready done this twice and don't want to do it again.

            Thanks Chaps and Chapesses

The top bolt had broken but due to this not being rectified by the previous owner the bush in the main bottom bolt had worn right through they tried to tighten it but could not keep it still. The top bolt was drilled out and replaced with nut and bolt.

              NiftyNev,

saved you the bother. See images attached. You are absolutely right, although it looks like it is just a large washer pressed in... maybe machining it out and replacing..?

              Blue,

If you need another alternator, I have my old one, but it will need rebuilding - as you can see this bush appears to be complete and when tightened didn't move around. StreetlugeChris or Hilux Bob will also likely have some knocking about.

A local breakers had a couple of surfs in so I popped down and captured an alternator of one of them. Looks a good unit. Three months G&T with it as well
Thanks For your Help Much Appreciated.
