  • Excessive black smoke

Hi, This has been going on for a couple of weeks. I know being a diesel I can expect a certain ammount of black smoke on start up, but recently the old girl's been belching out the black stuff on acceleration. Mainly pulling off in 1st or if I'm in low revs in 2nd of 3rd gear. Funny thing is that if I stop at the newsagents half way to work in the morning then jump back in and restart the engine everything is fine after that no more smoke.
I put in some injector cleaner and that hasn't seemed to work.
The trucks going in for it's regular 6monthly service next week so if anyone's got any good ideas as to what it may be ,it would be much appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Andy.

has the timing belt been changed recently? Slightly out of sync fuel pump can give black smoke.

Or it could be the injectors need a proper overhaul. Any muck on there can alter the spray patten.

Mine smokes a bit, from research on here, seems like it's fairly normal.
I'd rather be scared to death than bored to death

        injectors

try yellow pages under "diesel fuel injection"
most of these places can re-furbish with new tips, springs.etc for around£35 per injector

          Injectors

          Hi Andy.

I had smoke problems with mine after I replaced the head. I took it to "Poole Diesels" 01202 749071. What a difference !!! lots less smoke, more power and a lot smoother. They certainly seem to know their stuff.

Normal is just a wash setting.

            Hi Andy,

Has it been serviced? If the air filter is crapped up then it will start to smoke more. Are you doing more than the recommended mileage before servicing it (6000miles / 100000 km for filters, oil every 3000) or just the six months as you said?

Also after time the engine will get more coked up so using this stuff might improve things as well http://www.ecotekplc.com/power_boost.htm and is cheaper than a new head

            Rich.
If life's an uphill struggle then downhill from now on can't be that bad?!

Nice one, the chap who I work with knows the owner of poole diesels, maybe get a discount if I need it done.

If it aint any of that then I'm off to Poole diesels !

I have the same problem. Need to get it sorted for the MOT.

How much did Poole Diesels charge for the work, and how long ago did you get it done?

Sounds like jut what I need...

Worked out at about £185.00 to refurb all 4 injectors, check pump timing and fit new fuel filter. Dont know if this is a good price for this area or not. I was just amazed at the difference. Had the work done in May.

Poole diesels did the injectors the other day and completely cured the problem and no more smoke . Top notch service all round.

                          Andy.

I don't have the smoke problem, just running a bit rough, even when warmed up. It might be a good excuse to hitch up the caravan and have a few das down Poole way!
                              It's only a hobby!
