Starter noise and not starting

Hi there. After years of my Surf being the most reliable thing in my life, it now won't start. I was using it daily for years but now it's a weekend/beach car. It turns over but is making a really strange noise when doing so - it's a higher pitch noise than usual.

Does this ring a bell with anyone? Any ideas? I really need to get it going again as I have several jobs I need to do with it, but no money in the bank to take it to a garage at the mo....

UPDATE: God knows what the problem was. I charged the battery and eventually got it started and from then on it's been ok, something was obviously stuck.......
