  • Oil Change Question

    Hi All
I'm three weeks into being a Surf owner.(1991 2.4 Turb ssr Ltd ) Wish I'd got one sooner, It's a great drive. I've never owned a diesel before, so how often do you service and change oil. What oil would you recommend. any advice on servicing would be a great help. Ill be doing it myself.

i change mine every 5000km, (3000-ish miles) i use semi synthetic, and new filter every 2nd change, remember to take off the oil filter access plate which is under the wheel arch in line with the filter. due to the frequency of oil changes, i bought a drain plug with screwon drainer, look at the link below.

yes, go to http://www.milneroffroad.com/everything you could want here, but they'll probably keep up with tradition and send you the wrong sized aircon belt should you order one.

i know I dont have a Surf but I have mine changed every 3k ish... prob the most important maintenance on a diesel i'd say. keep her oiled up and it will last you.

Yes 3000 miles is recomended oil change then every other one its oil and filter ie 6000 1200 etc. Personally I can't see the point of not changing the filter every time you do an oil change. For the sake of a couple of quid I change my filter every time I change my oil.

                  Hi,

Just done the oil and fuel filters yesterday, not too much of a problem (even for me and I've never done it before).

Noticed a strange noise coming from the turbo when I drove to work this morning. Not a scary metal grinding type noise, more of a slightly louder/different whine than usual. Maybe a result of different oil/time to circulate around the system?

Thanks to people here who advised about the access plate in the wheel arch, I'd have never done it without it.

                  Cheers,

                  Jon.

I am not sure about the type of oil you guys normally run, but here in Australia we have come to recognise the value of low ash oil. The Japaneese diesels are developed and designed for a low ash oil and dont like the oils you would normally run in an american or european diesel. I now use Castrol J-Max available here in Australia and it is specially developed for Japaneese diesels. I love the stuff, and wont use anything else.

                      Cheers

Mine's up for it's first change since I got it.

                        How much does it take?

Also, can we get this low ash Castrol J Max in the UK?

As for changing the filter every other time, as all 3 only cost £12 from Milners, why not change all every 3000miles? The fuel and air filter only take 10mins once you know what you're doing. Just a thought...

Yeah did mine this weekend...no probs at all.

I was going to change the Fuel filter but wasnt too sure. What precautions do i need to take ie is there a special procedure i need to follow to change the fuel filter??
