  • fuel pump leak

    hi folks,

got the denso drips so the trucks stripped down to the point of removing fuel pump sprocket as described in the aussie site link for the job.
Im going to do the timing belt/water pump, crank seal , belts etc as its in bits but i have a couple of qu's before progressing if anyone cares to comment.

1, reading around, i think on the aussie site it said that a prolonged fuel leak can degrade the oilsump gasket leading to oil leaks....mines been unhappy for 2-3 weeks so am i likely to have done this?.....

2, i did the top fuel pump seal in situ but it didnt cure the dripping, so the pumps coming out as it seems to be the block side timing piston cover thats the source....when its out i can change the seals myself but is it better to take it to a diesel specialist to sort and test for peace of mind and what should i be paying? on the basis it was running fine im not looking for a stripdown and overhaul, just seals and testing.
3, my pump timing marks are not aligned anyway so when i put it back should i put it where it currently is ( 3-5mm out) or line them up as specified.?
im not sure about injection timing ....is it necessary to have it adjusted with a dial indicator in situ or can i just guess and hope it doesnt turn into Drax Powerstation when i set it to the old position?

    comments appreciated

ps is it better to get the RufTrax parts rather than Milners still? last opinion is well old so recent experience appreciated

    cheers guys happy surfing

Get the seal kit from roughtrax. They have nice Viton seals that are much more resilient.

No don't worry about it causing sump gasket problems.

Do the seals yourself. It's. Easy to do once the pump is out.

If you do the fuel distributor seal (big one at back of pump) be careful cause the pumps internals can and probably will fall out. But easy enoughto put back together.

As for the timing, put it back exactly where it is now. Mark it before removing. Make sure the pump body is in same place and pump pulley is in same place. All should be ok.
well, that was a bad idea!

They might say that, but much more likely that they're knackered from being 20 years old.

3 weeks isn't that long and the sump is a bit annoying to get off, wait for it to actually leak before worrying, likley all will be fine.

ive now got everything off the pump but its a pig to get out!
Is it just a matter of wiggling till it comes out or do i need to loosen the injector pipes at the manifold end to give the pump room to move back.?....hopefully not as they look a pig to get to as well.

Sorry ive not been on for a bit to tell but been a bit busy!!!!!
yep, finally got the pump out, but got an injection guy to change the seals with the kit from roughtrax for an hours labour which seemed better than me stripping the cheesehead screws .
The leak was from the block side seal , high pressure timing piston cover so there was no other way but to pull the pump.
Took me a while to get it back together but i changed the timing belt and tensioner and crank seal at the same time, plus fitted an egr blank. and rerouted the vac pipes as per writeup. .
Pulled both halfshafts and cleaned the grease out and fitted new boots.
            Greased up both propshafts
I filled it full of redex and blew up the A1 at a zillion mph to clean it out , prior to the MOT and it pi$$ed the emissions test it had previously failed...0.85 pass .
Dont know whether it was one or all things that caused the fail, fuelpump leak , egr, cold test , pump timing out , but it now starts first crank, no smoke and def feels sharper.
So its new fwhubs, arb bushes front and back, upper balljoints and diff oil changes this week, extended diff breathers when the bits arrive off ebay and hopefully itll be ready for the awful weather i bought it for last winter that never arrived!
Im quite pleased with the old bus and myself for getting it done cos it would have been an arm and a leg to get a garage to do it labour costs being what they are now...so i spent my cash on parts and tools instead .....im a novice and doing it outside was not great but if i can sort one of these anyone can.
Just wish id addressed it between May and September with light and warmth!!!!
