    Hello,
    New parents(surfers) here to 1992 2.4 ssr x
What a proud day bringing home the new baby to meet his big brother Rusty the landrover. Only had for 1 week when noticed the leaky diaper....we wish.... spent entire day trying to locate source of leak...smelled like a diesel mechanic afterwards....wondering if it has done my hair any good ...well still none the wiser and having consulted many a friend on the problem only to have them scratch their heads in dismay..bearing bad news regarding reconditioning the fuel injection pump...new seals....pulling engine apart....eeeek!
Well..... have spent all day reading posts on this new found site and hopefully we have it sussed...seal around pump may be the cause...fingers crossed....so col is away to try locate new seal and i am here writing and hoping i'll be out surfing again by the end of the day..will keep you posted on events as they unfold.....
    Kids huh!...cost a fortune....demand all your time.....but don't ya just love em

Lyn and Col from Scotland now Australia...x

P.S.....any advice on Surf maintenance/general up keep would be much appreciated as we are complete novices...never had a diesel engine to play about with..or a turbo...whole new kettle of fish than working on the old series Landy...byex

Welcome guys. Hope that the problem is the seal although it isn't that easy to change. IT seams to be a relatively common problem when they get older and the seals dry out and shrink. To be honest I can't think of many other places that will be liable to leak except bad pipes, the fuel filter (this has two rubber seals on it - one around the top sealing the filter to the housing and the other on the bottom sealing the water sensor to the filter).

One thing is that once you have it all running OK you will probably spend a lot less time working on it than the Landy. Diesel engines are generally a lot less trouble than petrol engines as there is a loot less to go wrong.

    Cheers

        On The Road Again

        Awww Thanks Andy and Neville

I'd just finished writing last post when Col came in brandishing spankin new shiney shaped seal for the fuel pump located at our nearest 'yota garage for the grand sum of..wait for it....$13(about 5 british pounds).took all of 20 minutes to replace...thankful we didnt have to pull the front off the engine. We are now up and running..not a leak to be seen...it's taking longer to clean up the diesel spills of our driveway. What a relief though as we were quoted between $470-$1200 to get it fixed at diesel injection specialist...one guy wouldnt even look at it..coward...so here we are... happy as the proverbial pigs in !!!!. We were just scared to do it ourselves in the beginning what with all the wires and sensors and things under that bonnet which the old landy just doesnt have....Thank F. for this site....a godsend to say the least and saved us a fortune....so until the next time....here we go here we go here we go.....Here's to eternal battles over the Surf keys.....hehe....i already have them hiddn in the plant pot..shhhhhh.
(we live directly across from big 4wd adventure playground and huge sand pit of Fraser Island (QLD) and desperate to bump about in luxury....what a change to the old boneshaker Landy..thank F. the seal prob didn't happen there..phew!)
