  • Upper ball joints

    Hi all,

Just about to change all the ball joints and as I'm expecting the bolts that hold the upper ball joints in place to snap or shear off, what size bolt do I need to buy to replace them with?

    Anyone ??

Thanks for the link, but it doesn't state what size or length bolts I need. The lower ball joints come with new bolts but the upper joints don't, I'm guessing I can't just go to B&Q or similar for some the same size. I just need to know which bolts I need and where to go for them

They may not break chap...I was surprised to find mine didn't, just last week.

Don't get them in B&Q (made of butter)...I don't know the official spec but my best guess would be for a 10.4 grade bolt and M8 course thread. I'm sure someone will enlighten us shortly

Cheers Andy, hoping they won't break but knowing my luck etc. Think I'll have to go through the entire front end, it's developed a strange creaking sound when turning the front wheels, but I can't point to anything in particular as everything looks like it's been on there since ut was built, I'll start with the ball joints, a new steering damper, and the shox you sent to me and if something hasn't broke after that I'll go from there lol.

Your not alone...I'm looking for a clonk when I switch off, decided to start with the front suspension (since it's very rusty), do the ball joints and check the bushes etc then move onto the rusty sump and check engine mounts while I'm at it.

Thought i might as well derust the bash plate while I'm taking it off...and so on. Hoping I can get it done before autumn starts and the push bike becomes less inviting!

Yeah, there's always something, there all cursed, every last one of them, lol. The hardest part is fixing the problems previous owners have caused by not having a clue or taking them to mainstream mechanics who either don't know enough or don't care enough

I have a creek when I cut hard to the right. My upper and lower balljoints have been done, bearings, tierods too. One guy told me it could be that my coil is cracked. I have yet to replace it and find out though.

                    Most likely culprits are these......

Type steering stops into the search box for more info.
                    p.s. Ignore the green circle.

I forgot mention that I've checked that as well. The stops are still there and in good shape.

The bolts will be m6x1.25. Length I'm unsure exactly. They're about 30-40mm.
well, that was a bad idea!

Saying that, aren't they studded? Mine are with nuts that go on.

M6 is way to small....steering stops will be more like m10 and ball joint mounts m8...
