Cheers for that, just filled up again and calculated it at 17.2Mpg. That is purely for short trips. I have recieved my Milners filter kit in the post this morning, going to fit those at the weekend. When I looked at the air filter, it seemed to be really black and full of all sorts of crap.

Not sure about the overdrive being off, as I understand it, turning the overdrive off (so the light on the dash comes on), only stops it from going into top gear. Between my home and work (about 5 miles), I hardly ever get into top gear. I could give it a try though.

    Cheers,

    Jon.

      Overdrive

seems to be a different concept of overdrive to what i know on landys - ie when u engage o/d it has an effect on all gears if left in as it only affects the final drive ratio not the gearbox ratio - (if you know what i mean),

are we saying the 2.4 auto box is a 4 speed or 3+overdrive

funny thing that mentioned about fuel 'brands' as i'll swear down every time i stick £20 in at the local 'Q8' garage instead of the BP it goes like sh1t off a wet stick!

currently trying some of that green redex stuff for clean out - my vehicle never usually smokes but i floored it at lunch to avoid a transit and had a james bond style black cloud at 4000rpm - tried to replicate it up a hill 2 mins later - nothing! weird - spose its just the redex doing its stuff -another thing - why was it twice the price of petrol redex ?!

as for fuel economy - mine has been a 26mpg average in the 6 weeks of owning - various trips out but doing short trips to and from work/lunch/errands. worst mpg was trip to blackpool illuminations £22 of fuel for a 80 mile trip - all that idling really eats the fuel - worth noting in your fuel calculations i think.

      still grinning though!!!!!!

      take care

      Chris

It's also worth trying different fuels. Supermarket fuel is generally bad for MPG. The best I have found is Total allthough for some reason it does not have as much power on motorways.

Another thing you could do is a decoke using this stuff http://www.ecotekplc.com/power_boost.htm read some good independent test reports on it. Have just done mine today.

Also you could try a fuel catalyst such as the broquet http://www.broquet.co.uk

One thing to remember using all these cleaner fuels is that the additives removed used to lubricate parts of the system. So it is a good idea to put a cleaner through the system every so often to redress the balance.

Good to see all these comments and how true some are especially about new owners keep driving for any excuse. In my first couple of weeks I was visiting the garage twice a week and was terrified even to consider the mpg. Had it a couple of months now and have started logging it. First result 21.55mpg mixed driving with roof rack, thats coming off at the weekend to see if things improve. When you consider its size, areodynamics and engine size its not that bad realy as my CBR600 only does 34mpg.

mines roughly the same (16-22mpg), unlike my cossie which averaged 22mpg normally and 14-16mpg on a grinning day

                The MPG SNOB

Had the old girl for 2 months now and have logged all fill-up MPG's.
I always put 20 quids worth in our 2.8 1991 non turbo , manual Surf.
And...I am getting 28- 30 MPG. More 30 if I am in extra "TICKLE THE GAS PEDAL MODE".

I think economy is all in the foot! One thing I have noticed is that you can't drive these things like a petrol car. There's no use trying to race that Ford Fiesta at the lights from standstill. First and second gear are only there to get you to fourth gear quick!!! Then that's where you will have that Fiesta on the long straights.

I have a very economical foot . One tip is..." never look in your rear view mirror to see the speed merchants up your ass"! Just dip the gas, diesel or vegetable oil nice and lightly...about 0-30 mph in days rather than milliseconds. Also don't over do the revs on very, very steep 1-3 hills like the ones I encountered on the way to Whitby and around Goathland.

I like to sit on the motorways at 60-65 mph and then I get the biggest buzz when I hit the juice to overtake just as a big Beamer is approaching and he wonders how this big "One-Up From A Tractor" Surf can do such excelleration!

My Surf hasn't got any markings indicating engine size etc on the rear. e.g
2.8 D so it keeps the tail enders guessing.

Fuel consumption - A friend of mine from Portsmouth has a Kawasaki H2750 2 stroke triple from the early 70's, taking it easy it returns about 20mpg, if he rides it hard it'll drop to around 16! The best part is it has a 3 gallon petrol tank giving him a useful range of 60miles at most. Everything about it makes him grin.

It's true that most bikes are very efficient, but there are some that break the mold.

I regret to say that I have just sold my Yamaha VMAX. On the odd occasion when I had the guts to ride it hard it would return 6-8mpg. Max you would ever get was 12. Giving you between 50-100 miles between fill ups.

Still, good for a grin though.

Used to use it to justify the 18mpg for my truck!

                      first check

If its of any interest to anyone, my first tank on my new surf has returned 23 mpg.
2.4 TD manual, mixed town and motorway. also been revving in fourth to burn off the smoke.
So maybe next tank will be better.
                      .......because I can....OK!

If you are trying to clean the engine by revving it you need to do it under load.

Average, well so much depends on how you drive it between 22-28 mpg.

I've had a 3.0 auto (1995) for 2 weeks now and I'm 'averaging' 18-20mpg. Used for daily 20-mile commute across open moorland roads, no traffic, 1:5 hill with hairpin bends plus motorway stretch at speeds of 20-60mph, plus fortnightly trip down M1 at around 70. Having just swapped from MX5 1.8i I'm trying to keep off the right pedal (soo tempting) and keep the revs down but fuel consumption doesn't seem to have improved. Going to get filters changed and start using Power Plus to see if it improves. If not, the threads on veg oil are very very interesting...
