I have a new cylinder head, recon injectors and a new turbo. I was hoping one of these changes would help the white smoke on startup. The engine is rattling for 2 rev-ups, lots of white smoke with a puff of black, then clearish. Runs great after 30secs, and great one warmed up. What is causing it????

more than likely glow plugs.
if they are ok probably air getting sucked into fuel lines or injection pump seals starting to go. air gets sucked in pas the seal as the pump cools down. lack of fuel in pump leans it runs retarded injection until the pump is filled back up after running for a little bit. make sure the primer on the fuel filter is working. if the one way valve leaks fuel can go back to tank which helps air get drawn into the pump. some people fit one way valve down at the tank.
but 90% of the time its glow plugs, especially after a head change and they have mucked up the main glow connection shorting it out and blowing the glow fuse.

I will check the glow plug fuse, I put in new plugs last week, to no avail.
I reckon it is the fuel pump from what you say. How easy is a fuel pump rebuild?
I see roughtrax sell a kit and there are rebuild kits on ebay. Any recomendations? I dont have a manual for any torque setting if I rebuild the pump myself, but I dont mind doing it. dose the pump unbolt from the side, or does it need the timing belt removed like the pickup 2L engine?

first thing is to pump the fuel filter primer before starting. if it starts ok then its air in the pump and you will have to track down where the air is being sucked in.
injection pumps, some seals you could change yourself but otherwise its a specialist job.
