  • 2.4 losing power- oil leak the cause?

Morning, my darlin' 2.4 is acting up again....

Ive had an oil leak for some time (maybe 4months) but have never let her run dry. Two months ago I had the valve cover gasket replaced, but still she drips... Then I had the engine washed down at a mechanics who said the drip was around the turbo. So he glued it (whatever 'it' was) but still she drips... He says, that it's prob just old engine syndrome and the engine needs to come out and have internal gaskets fitted.

Im abroad(estonia) so its hard to communicate with the mechanic, but I dont think he's trying to con me, as well, he doesnt really want to do the work and instead just says I should buy a newer car - everytime something goes wrong. Maybe he's right, but i've not got the cash for that! Plus I dig the surf big time

Anyway, i was happy to be just running her and topping up the oil every few days but now I have power lose. Usually its fine up until 50mph or so.. Green turbo light goes off, then she has no steam....

Ive changed the fuel filter about month ago and only ran diesel in her since. Previously, i'd been using wvo but its too cold for that here now.

Ive been reading the forum posts, and sounds like I should change the fuel filter anyway and clean the fuel lines and tank? Some filter in the tank or something too?? I will also change the oil and give it a new oil filter, just so not to abuse the old girl.

But, is it possible that this oil leak is the reason for loss of power also? If at all possible, I will just get thw surf into the mechanics and have it pull it apart and clean the fuel lines etc there and then. If not a possibility the oil leak is the cause, i'll just have the lines cleaned etc. He's a grumpy mechanic who doesnt approve of my two tank system for wvo, so the least he needs to do, the better. His heart is not in it lets say...

Maybe I could clean the fuel lines myself?

Shit thats a long post! More like a diary entry than a forum post...

    Any advice, as usual, appreciated.

    Jim

Hahaha! If only I could. He's meant to be the best around here and I live deep in a rural area. But yeah, I ####ing wish I could.

Have you checked for ECU codes?

Maybe I can stick him on a ryan air flight! The mechanic here just told my (estonian speaking) girlfriend that we will be looking at between 1000 and 1500 euro as he needs to take the engine out to problem solve and fix. This is not an option.

The surf starts no problems and drives fine up until 60kmp or for more than 20minutes. Any ideas what I could do to problem solves myself at least?

Just read this so found up a previous post about how to do it. I found the grey box, but it looks a bit fried no? Seems to have white gunk in the teminals...?? Is this looking healthly?! (Photo attached?)

                    Yep, that's normal.

Ok, I did the engine code thing using a spent rivet as I didnt have any paper clips to hand

It's clocking in 12 very quick flashes group together. I counted up to fifteen cycles of these 12 quick flashes then bottled it and thought I would ask if this is happening correctly.

                        Anyone know what this means?

                        Thanks

Thanks for this Bushwaker. I've found another guy, unofficial mechanic, who lives nearby who can take a look saturday. I will ask him to clean the fuel pump, lines and tank filter (?) and I will do the oil change plus oil filter and fuel filter myself.

But before I do, is there any chance that an oil leak can be to blame for the power loss? Because I can live with topping it up with oil, as long as the performance returns. I had a new head on it a 8months ago and as much as I love the surf, I just cant afford 1500euro to fix an oil leak - unless it is essential! Know what I mean?

                            Re: The oil leak....

There's an oil feed pipe to the turbo, it could be leaking there which would only need a Jubilee clip or two to fix.

Check inside the ducting between the turbo and the air filter, oil vapour condenses in there which can build up and drip out of the rubber elbow at the turbo end.

Also, the oil filter is on the same side as the turbo, is it screwed on tight?

It may also be worth checking the initial repair your mechanic carried out, assuming that he tried gluing the turbo inlet hose, the rubber 90' elbow fitting.
                              I tried the same.
It didn't last very long and was back to dribbling oil out again, the material gets brittle after twenty or so years.

A new one cured that leak.
