  • clunk from underneath

Turning the steering wheel through no more than 90 degrees either way sometimes reults in an audible metallic clunk/ double clunk from the underside at the front. I can feel it through the floor pan as well. Is this typical of a worn set of bushes?

Steering Bump Stops. Do a search here. Grease them. Everything you need to know about anything to do with Surfs is on here somewhere - use search and you'll find what you need.

Sounds like you've either got worn steering arm bushes or a ball joint on its way out. If you've got an audible clunk then it should be fairly easy to spot if you get some to wriggle the steering wheel while you watch the moving bits. If something moves too much (or falls on the floor ) then that's the culprit.

        aye had a look

Thanks lads, had a shufty and found a loose bolt attached to some sort of veritcally aligned stop. Tightened, and bingo. I think. Dealer offered to look but dinna fancy the 100 mile trek for nowt. Might wait and see if I've done job.

Am total rubbish at car DIY having always owned new, but am determined to tackle the steep learning curve of older car ownership. That said, of all the s!!!!y motors I've owned, none have left such a smile on the face. Man I love the car.
