Sounds like the head, unlikely to be the gasket.

I have a question, seriously. Why should the top of the rad be cold if the head or gasket is faulty? If the water pump is ok shouldnt it at least push some hot/warm water around. Just trying to learn.

froth is not uncommon just from the coolant used.
                  bubbles is a different story.

                  is it overheating?

also all those symptons is what you get when you have no thermostat.
also having no thermostat CAUSES OVERHEATING and head cracking.
you need the thermostat in there to close off the bypass port. with bypass open 1/2 the water bypasses the radiator.

silly thought...have you checked the water level?
...and I don't mean in the expansion tank....

                          My thoughts exactly.
If there ain't enough water to touch the sensor then it ain't gonna look like its getting hot.

Cap on the thermostat housing was what i meant...just wanted to be sure you'd done that (which you have by the sound of it)...obviously the expansion tank doesn't reflect the level in the engine.
