  • Hi, hilux 2.4 turbo doesn't want to start, what to look for?

Hi, i have a 1995 toyota hilux 2.4 2L-te auto. Went to start it yesterday and it turned normally but didn't start. Already checked glow plugs to see if they are shot and found the one at the back to be shot. Then checked to see if there is voltage coming to the glow plugs by connecting a volt meter to wire connected to the metal bar thats connected with glow plugs. When i turned the ignition on it showed 12v and it stayed like that for 4 seconds after the glow plug light went out and then the relay clicked and voltage dropped to 0v. I suppose this is normal?
    What should i check next?

The funny thing is that the van was put in the garage normally and when i went to start it just turned but didn't start.

Where can i find a 2L-te workshop manual?

    Thanks

Crack an injector pipe at one of the injectors.

My money, as always, is on the glow plugs.
Do you know that, with a 50 character limit, it's

Glow plugs are good except one and they are getting voltage as i checked with a multi meter, do i crack the injector pipe from where the pipe is connected to the injector or from where the pipes are connected to the pump? Or can i undo the fuel return pipe and see if it spills out fuel while cranking?

          Thanks

Voltage to glow plugs means very little. They still might not be any good. You need to test resistance of each individually.

            Crack pipe at injector.

How do i check the resistance? Do i need to remove them? The way i checked them is by touching a piece of wire to the glow plugs which was connected to the + side of the battery, 3 of them made a spark and the back one did nothing, if their is a better way to test them i can try.

If i post a photo of the injection pump could someone label it for me? I.e mark which component is which?

              Thanks

You remove them and use a multimeter set to Ohms.

I'll post a pic of the 2L-TE pump with parts labeled later.

you should get 10.5v then it drops off to 6.5v at the plugs. The plugs are all connected by the buzz bar, so get voltage across all of them. So you need to take them out individually to test them properly.
Check for resistance, less than 1ohm is good anything over that they are shot.

                        Starting Problem

I has starting problems with my Land Cruiser LJ with the same 2.4 engine and it turned out to be the spark plugs. For what a new set cost I'd bang a set in for the cold winter.

Good news everyone! I have fixed the hilux!
What it turned out to be was that the priming pump had stuck 'open' and fuel returned back.

I removed the diesel pipe from the priming pump on top of the filter that is going to the injection pump, then started to pump the primer and no diesel was coming out so i continued to pump the primer, then after a minute or so diesel started to come out of the pipe. I reattached the pipe and continued to prime the pump so the ip would fill itself, then i tried to start it and after 2 sec of cranking it started and worked normally and let it run for a while.

I would like to thank everyone who tried to help me, really appreciate it!
