  • Oil in water 2.4 ln130

Hi all, I have a 2.4 td LN130 surf. It had a new head and reconditioned block fitted 40000km ago. last weekend i took it on a 1200km journey. I topped it up with oil on the way home. may have been 2mm overfill. anyway after a trouble free journey I checked the water the day after and found some oil in the water.

Has anyone got any idea what this could be? Im thinking the oil cooler. Hoping its not the head gasket.

I flushed the radiator out the other day and drove for about 20min. checked water again and oil under radiator cap.

    Cheers

Is it an auto?I think the oil is more likely to be ATF fluid rather than engine oil. The rad cools down the ATF fluid as well, in a separate chamber in its bottom 1/4. Might be that there is contamination between the two if the rad is corroded.
I'd get the rad flushed and well checked out. Cheers

Its a manual, and the oil in water is very black so i assume its engine oil. Any more thoughts?

Could be leak from oil cooler on turbo side of block into the cooling system.

This is a pic of oil cooler alloy housing with the oil cooler removed. See the area above the orange circle? They can corrode through around that area and allow oil into the cooling system. Another possibility is the gaskets where the oil cooler itself bolts to the housing, where the two oblong flange areas are.

What sort of condition is the overall cooling system in? If only tap water was used and no coolant, then there will be a lot of corrosion. Maybe even corrosion of the timing cover allowing oil and water to mix there. I have seen a few where it's just not worth trying to fix.

cooling system is reasonably good. reconditioned radiator about a year ago. coolant in the water. doesn't overheat. Temperature always stays just below half. if it was leaking near the timing cover what would be some signs?

              Cheers

                Nev,

I have the internal oilcooler part out of a hiace. this has 5 fins. can you tell me how many fins a surf oil cooler should have and will this one fit. the housing for a hiace is different but i plan on using my old housing with the internal oilcooler out of the hiace.

                Cheers

3 fins. I have one here somewhere if you need more details such as measurements. No idea what size the hiace one is you have or what engine/vehicle it's from so wouldn't have a clue about fit.

If anything is corroded it's probably the alloy housing and not the cooler. The cooler that I took out of a housing was quite good, but the housing was starting to corrode.

In the pic I posted you can see they are copper coated inside. All the shiny bits is where i cleaned out the alloy corrosion.

                      thanks nev,

I guess i'll find out tomorrow whether the housing is buggered or not, mechanic is taking it out. I'm from New Zealand and replacement oil cooler housing and coolers are rather hard to find. except from toyota who want to charge $2000

If you take it out and it is corroded, maybe it could be welded. Big question mark over that so thats something that a good mig or tig welder could answer. Let us know what you find.

wreckers are full of blown up 2.4 you can get them off.
failing that hilux or hiace housing will fit but need turbo oil hose to be re routed.
