possible viscous fan prob

Hi all,
My 2.4 is very noisy idling at the mo, though towed 80 mile on monday with seemingly no probs.

Q1. If its the viscous fan, is there a walk thru for a 2.4 LN130 ( and i mean from opening the bonnet right thru to finish)

Q2. ive read that a better oil can be used, if so what (bearing in mind i tow quite a heavy caravan)

Q3. Is it likely to be the oil, or do they fail completely?

Tried a forum search but most references were to 3 lt trucks are they the same as mine ?

They can sieze, start the engine from cold, get a rolled up newspaper and push it slowly into the fans fins, it should stop, if it doesn't and it mashes up the paper it's seized, if it stops, hold it there till the engines warm and the fan engages, you will feel lots of resistance and it may eat the newspaper.

Also check to see if it's the fan at the front of the rad, this might be running constant.

It would also be helpful to try to describe the noise?

Like Luke has said is it the fan in front of the radiator?
Does the noise start as soon as the ignition comes on?

If you do go ahead I would put in 10,000 silicone oil instead of the 6000 toyota uses. I used it when I rebuilt my engine.

I also tiger sealed the coupling back together as the O seal does not seem to be that great, I didn't want any leaks. My O ring actually expanded from age and I had to cut a chunk out of it to fit it back in as it was too big.

You will also need an impact screwdriver to take it apart. Don't try with a normal driver you will just round the heads off. I bought a Draper one and it made light work of it.

I went on what a lot of other members have done; put a higher viscosity oil in to improve cooling. I didn't fancy sealing it solid like some people have done.

Having a thicker fluid will I suppose improve cooling to a fashion in as much as the thicker fluid may cause the fan blades to be dragged round a bit more.But this is not how the coupling is designed to operate.
The weight of the fluid will only become a factor when lock up occurs.Why stop at 10,000 why not get some 30,000?

However with the viscous fan coupling having the correct amount of fluid is more important.IF you wanted to improve the cooling then you have a few options.
You could lower the lock up temperature.
You could use more fluid.



However with regards to the OP we don't know if the noise is fan or even viscous fan related, and as good an idea as refilling the coupling is we as of yet still don't know what the issue is.

update

Hi all , sorry for the delay in bringing you up to date, personal shIte and lack of emails from the board saying ive got replies. Anyway...
mate had a listen to the surf, tested the fan as suggested. Concluded that its not the fan (thank god) buit one or both of the belts. (not the air con one as the aircon is disabled, but not removed). As for a better description of the noise, i cant say more than a sort of clickity clack, mostly when idling.
The belts are shiny in the middle, and worn on the outside edge if thats of any help.
Course my father in law threw his two penny and suggested the water pump, but ive no water probs at the mo.
Soooo, off to rough tracks for a pair of belts, seems the cheapest way to start. What do you think ??

You can get a metallic rattly noise from the harmonic balancer pulley. (big one at the bottom) have a look and see if it's rotating smoothly and not pulsating in and out too much. If it debonds itself you can get the 2 halves rotating at different speeds. To test get some paint or Tipex and draw a line straight across all 4 pulley wheels. Run the engine for a min then shut off and see if they're all still aligned.

Is that little idler wheel by the air con pump spinning? Also if you dont use aircon why dont you take it out, I have, its much better and more space.



As you dont use air con, cut the belt off and see it it's still there. That will atleast rule it out.
