  • Adding Engine Oil! Really?!(ATF&PS)

Mixing engine oil to your regular ATF and Power Steering Fluid.
Anyone out there can back up this theory?
    Does this really work?
And does it not damage the transmission parts?

I have encountered several folks around town who work on Diesels... and yes including Toyota Hilux's and Surf's..

They recommended to exchange 1liter of ATF and use Engine oil.
They claim that it gives better performance due to the added viscosity.

Say on a 2LTE Automatic Transmission, uses 7 liters of ATF, now use 6liters and your 7th liter will be the engine oil.

My case, I use up to 9 liters of ATF since I now use an external (air cooled) Transmission Fluid Cooler. Front mounted, yes.

    Thanks in advanced.

Why bother, or risk it, if your 'box is working fine why mess with it?

Can't think of any 'performance' improvements you'd need or want on the trans, it works great, I see Surfs with 200k plus km's on them and the gearbox is still shifting and pulling fine.

Just maintain it properly and treat it nicely, and it'll give its best for years.

Bushwacker and Tony thanks so so much for your advice. I knew it was a bad idea. I knew I should ask you guys first. Good thing I didnt mix the engine oil to my atf maintenance schedule yet. I scheduled my 2LTE SSRX A/T for a tranny/gearbox fluid change this coming week.
I already got all 8liters of ATF, MAG1 is the brand. I am using a front mount air cooled ATF cooler, so have to add 1 more liter to the default 7liters. I had the atf cooler in the radiator bypassed, not using it anymore. It gave me some trouble some time back. That dreaded strawbery milkshake.

going back. what specs or compatibility traits in the ATF should it be to work great with my Surf?
dextron3 less or what and also what else?

Honestly I am unsure/uncertain about these fluid to a/t tranny match-ups.
I have to ask the experts, ones I could trust on surfs, that's you guys.

a friend of mine in our local toyota autoclub suggested Voltronic synth ATF and Mobil synthetic ATF. What do you say?
I did a little digging: Which is suited best?
Voltronic ATF 9K2 Fully Synthetic (DEXRON II, II-D, III-G, III-H)
Voltronic ATF 9K Fully Synthetic (TOYOTA Type-4 / JWS 3309)
          Voltronic ATF 4K Semi Synthetic (TOYOTA Type-II / III / IV / D2 / WS / JWS 3309)

          Mobil™ ATF 220
high performance, fluid for automatic transmissions in older vehicles specifying Dexron IID.
(According to ExxonMobil, Mobil ATF 220 is of the following quality level)
          GM Dexron II/IID
          Allison C-4
          Renk Doromat
          Caterpillar TO-2
          Ford WSS- M2C163-A
          GM Type A Suffix A

          Mobil™ Multipurpose ATF
Mobil Multipurpose ATF is recommended by ExxonMobil for use in applications requiring:
          General Motors Dexron III H
          Ford Mercon
          Allison C-4

          Thanks in advance everyone.

thanks for responding woodwarm. havent heard of those either, atf/engine oil being added into the fuel tank. the only oils i've heard are used edible oil and the biodieself fuel with some sorta mixture and also if not coco oil, some sugar something, I can't recall.

I felt it was worrying to me to add engine oil to increase viscosity as several mechanics recommended. I know a bit that atf and ps fluids need to be low on viscosity to have those harware components run smooth. and heat increases viscosity. so cooling atf's and psf's are essential in some way. well most notably the atf.

Toyota type IV is used in the Lexus V8 transmissions.

It's a top quality ATF which contains friction enhancers, anti-foaming agents can withstand higher temps and can last 100,000 miles before needs replacing.
Lexus/Toyota charge £11 per litre over here!

My Gosh! that much! that is like 682Php in our currency per liter. That is a lot of money for just a liter.

Anyway, I have not yet checked out the prices of those oils. I'll update you on costing/pricing on those ATF's. soon as I get my surf running again. It's on a slight stand-still.
Having my fuel injector pump worked on. Leaking diesel. O-ring and stuff. My mechanic had a bit of trouble removing the 32mm at the head of the injector pump, whatever you call that thing. Nut I guess. Not sure but I bet you know what I am talking about.

If this is the same mechanic that told you to put engine oil in the auto box then it may be worth you changing your mechanic.
Did you also have issues with ATF and water contamination?
