  • 1st Gear Jump

I read with interest the thread relating to notchy gear change, which my recently purchasesd K reg SSR-X has.

Unfortunatly i can go one better than that, my Surf has an annoying habbit of jumping out of first gear!!. It ushally happens on an incline (in 2wd). Its pretty anoying especially when pulling onto a main road.
Can anyone advise on the propable cause?

Mine did that a couple of times and it scared S**t out of me.Thought something broke. It turned out to be me not pushing gear leaver forward enough.Problem solved for me but if yours still does this despite the little extra push forward then you may have to remove console and boots and remove the gear lever mechanism and check it out.

Theres 3 renewable parts on your lower gearstick. If as Nev says you strip out all the layers around the stick to the point where you can see the gearbox thru the hole in the tunnel, then theres just 4 x 12mm bolts between looking and getting the stick out.

When out theres a cup shaped bushing on the end of the stick, £2.50 buys a new one, that solved 1st jumping out for me.

Then you can remove the stick from the rectangular holding cover by placing the rectangular cover in a light hold in a vice. Slide the small boot up the stick away. The stick can be removed now if you can do with the locking collar what you would do with a light bulb i.e. push it and turn it to the left, I use to wide bladed screwdrivers for this. The collar may be broken as Delboy found out for himself. Under there is a green bushing which I believe can be replaced but I havent done it yet.

i've got a similar problem, but my clutch also gets stuck down if i hold it at biting point for too long. i then have to flick it up with my foot.
          Any suggestions?

Methinks the seals in your master cylinder have gone Barnabyp, you press the pedal and the piston in the clutch master cylinder sends hydraulic fluid down the narrow line towards the slave cylinder at very high pressure. If that fluid could find a way out thru some dodgy seal around the piston then it would and probably is so by the time you take your foot of the pedal, theres no pressure left in the line

Jim ,if that was the case you would not be able to select gear as the clutch would not disengage . It could be a seizing clutch fork pivot but I have not seen the set up on A manual Surf .Or clutch pedal pivot .To have a pedal 'lock' at biting point is unusual .
              Just a thought .

For what its worth, the pivot is the brass dome shaped lad in the upper centre of the pic, the fork is lying upside down in the middle of the pic and it sits down onto the dome thingy.

Our 2.4 did this, a seal was split and it jams the rod in the master cylinder.
