  • Howdy, Acceleration issues

Not sure if this is already on here, I have a 1993 Hilux Surft 2.4l Diesel. Noticed a bit of a problem with its pick up. At lights I'm getting quite a low rate of acceleration going from the stop postion to gaining speed, once at 2nd or 3rd gear its fine but it seems that initial pick up is going a little bit weak..

a friend suggested it could be that the injectors need to be cleaned but just looking for opinions

Are you sure its actually changing down to 1st, and not pulling away in 2nd.

Otherwise, all the usual things, give it a good service, plenty of fuel system cleaner, then consider some re-con injectors and see what happens.

Also check the ATF level and condition, and make sure brakes aren't binding.

      a few more details

I decided to add some details to be more exact:

When it starts idle's at around 800 but chugs every now and then (usually put idle up and fixes that)

When at lights occasionally chugs again or coughs you could say, still runs and nothing else but feels like it shouldnt be doing that

but the biggest thing, say im at a still position at a light if i hit the peddle down all the way it still slowly takes off for a bit till it revs high and kicks it to another gear I assume and its ok then

Has it always been like this, or a new thing? If you've never had a 2.4 before, you might be expecting to much...

personally havn't felt much the issue, I love the car more for its cruising feel and for an off road vehicle, in 4wd havn't felt anything bad

hahaha well I still think it's great, First car and just love what it opens me up to, I don't care about speed but rather where it can go, and I would love to see his sedan follow me off road, then see whose got issues

try the EGR if its stuck it can give bad idle and hesitant on pick up from a standing start

Also check if the fuel cap is causing a vacuum. I have a new cap and I'll be drilling some small holes as I had power problems the other day. Just unscrew it so that it can draw air in. Probably not that causing your problem, but it's something to rule out!
