  • Strange "paper Rattling sounds"..!!??

Hi Folks ..got a strange one for you here, Got a 2.4 1990 When I rev it up there is a sound coming from the left hand side of the engine bay at the back, it sounds like rattling paper, metal or tin foil, if that makes sense !! but I cant see any loose insulation or bits of anything flapping about and it sound almost as if its in the Turbo, (please no!)..any ideas..?

Does it make the noise when you are driving ?
Does the noise increase/decrease wit engine rpm?

Doesnt seem to have any pattern to it, sometimes when you hard accelerate it starts for a short time then can stop for the rest of your journey. Today I had to get the truck started after it had been stood a few weeks. Got it going, (tired batteries, but that a trucks life..) and when I raced the engine to clear the soot the noise came back then died off when the revs go back down. The revs only went up to 2 or 3 k but there it was.

I had something similar a while back, although this was more of a tinkling sound and not all the time.
Traced it down to a cracked exhaust hanger bracket.

Fluttering sounds are generally from back pressure in the turbo... you can here hear it a lot louder if you have an aftermarket air filter, or maybe your pipe has split?

Cheers..there is the original airfilter box fitted and the sound comes from the other side of the engine bay, (driver side) I'll check out the pipes though. Thanks..

Did you find the source of this problem? Is your truck a manual? Could it be a failing dual mass flywheel?
