  • ECU reset

Had a look up on net last night and found a way to reset ECU. I have probably done this loads of times to other cars, but unknowingly.
I was a bit not sure if it would work at first, but the more i thought of it, the more i thought....of cause it could work! So i did it this morning to the surf and the result is amazing!!!
    Smoother tickover
    Smooth revving
    Alot quieter and vibration reduced
    Less smoke on start up
    Alot less smoke running
Mpg has to of improved also due to significant changes to the engine

Basically, you disconect the batteries and then drain the capacitors in the ECU, some folk left the lights on ect and waited hours, but you can drain them in seconds by touching the wires together for a few seconds MAKE SURE YOU HAVE BOTH BATTERIES DISCONNECTED BEFORE DOING THIS!!!
Then connect them back up and start the car up. The change was instant on mine, though if you have a broken part/sensor it will still be the same.

The ECU takes a reading from the crank sensor on its first use and this is stored. Then every timing adjustment advance/retard in the pump is taken from this reading. Over time the engine wears in and things become of bigger tolerence, but the ECU still uses the old setting from the first time is was started.
When you reset the ECU, it takes another reading from the crank sensor and the timing is advanced/retarded to the worn in engine.

Some folk found no change, i did and for two minutes work, its class

I done it last year after the fuel pump got changed as it was running like a bag of spanners. Worked a treat.

Might give this a go on the weekend as my truck is running a bit rough. I'll let you know how I get on.

          Cheers,

          Paul

Yes I did , I didn't really notice any major difference, it dose seem to idle a bit smoother and pick up seems better but that may just be me thinking it is did you notice any difference when you did it ?

Misses a bit but sorts itself out after 20 secs.
well, that was a bad idea!

nice work. And real great write up. thanks for sharing. this is for the benefit for those who don't know yet or those who forgot that this procedure exists.

                        thanks again.

I'm still having trouble getting excited about this.

The very basic premice in the original post for doing this is wrong, the ECU constantly moniters the Crank position sensor to work out the timing and fueling all the time the engine is running.

The ECU has no knock sensor, or O2 sensor, its has no way of knowing how the engine is running, or how worn parts are! The crank sensor, TPS, engine speed, and all the temp sensors have preset values, that work together to deliver a preset amount of fuel and timing advance.

The pump is factory tuned with its correction resistors to match the ECU outputs.

I can't see how the ECU does any 'learning' with its very basic EFI system, it doesn't have any means to adjust anything or 'tune' the motor as you drive. Its just does its thing, and if anything electronic dosn't meet with its approval you get a fault code light. If anything mechnical isn't right the motor just dosn't run very well, but the ECU dosn't know it and carries on happily doing its thing.

There is nothing in any of my factory manuals about resetting the ECU. Apart from clearing the fault codes.

I came across this ECU reset thingy on the australian site and having read a heap of posts on that site were surfer's had noticed distinct improvement's on doing so. So while the truck was parked up whilst I replaced a rear drive shaft bearing I decided to give it a try.............got home tonight, put truck back together and took it for a quick spin, I noticed a definite improvement in take off, previously the new surf had seemed a tad sluggish from a standing start, not so now! I can't pretend to explain it but it did do something, y'all may wish to have a look at the thread here:

                            http://toyotasurf.asn.au/forum/viewt...ilit=ecu+reset

I disconnected the positive off both batteries and left light switch on overnight and it's the easiest, cheapest tune up I've done.....ever........suggest everyone give it a try and see what happens
