    Breather

I've inspected the breather but on the LJ70 there is a breather at the top near where the petrol car is that runs under the main filler pipe which joins onto rubber on the tank.

The was rotten and I intend to repair it with rubber pipe. I took a picture but its not that clear. Is the breather a one way valve? Could this be causing any of the problems mentioned above? You can just see the start of the rubber pipe on the chassis rail.

Do you mean the tube that runs alongside of the filler pipe?

Thats just a breather tube to release air pressure as you fill the tank.

The tank breather is a small one-way valve.

Look at the photos in that link I posted to give you an idea.

I looked but the setup of the breather position on the LJ70 seems higher up the rubber pipe.

If this breather was blocked at the metal section which was corroding away could this cause the problems I've been having?

Yes, as said to test it you can run it with the filler cap loose or off, if this cures it then the breather is your issue.
well, that was a bad idea!

OK, I see the part you're referring to now, had to go searching for a diagram.

Loosen the fuel cap or drill a small (4mm dia) hole in it and see if that cures the problem.
Disturbing your tank hoses may cause a lot more headaches looking at the state of them!

              Breather

Is the corroded pipe that connects to the rubber hose some sort of breather? Because its just a open rubber pipe at the moment minus a breather! I was just looking to patch it.

What's the long term plan recommended?

Most drill a hole in the fuel cap, its easy and does the job. Thats what I would recommend

i wouldn't. go on a decent angle and you will sit there with fuel pouring down the side of the surf.

got a gearbox breather, especially one that goes high up. if so just take out the breather valve and hook the tank breather to the gearbox breather.
otherwise just extend the tank breather up into the engine bay. just a small hose, it doesn't need to be big.

This is the UK, no one can afford to fill thier tanks with enough diesel to find it's way back up the filler tube!
