  • Just bought a hilux surf 2.4 turbo diesel

    Hi all,
just bought a 1990 'H' reg Hilux surf. Bodywork pretty sound apart from a few wee scratches. (about 170,000 km on clock).

I drove it home and there was a serious lack of power, its the 2.4 turbo diesel. Took it in the garage and all the turbo pipes were split so they have replaced them. But it still doesnt seem like its got the power it should have. They have also changed filters and done a service etc...

Also it has a black button to the left of the steering wheel which clicks when you press it but don't seem to do much else. And the ignition over runs slightly when you turn it off. And when you go over 100km it makes a beep noise like a seetbelt sound in a new car!

Back window dont seem to have much guts in it, needs a bit of help to get it down and up with the key.

Apart from that it seems ok (ha ha). If anybody could give me any help or pointers on any of these i would really appreciate it.

    Cheers

    Bazza.

The 2.4 is not exactly a ball of fire although it's not gutless normally, could be they got the vacuum hoses on incorrect. Off the top of my head it's difficult to come up with a solution without knowing more.

The black button could well be a turbo timer button which could explain the running on when you switch it off. A turbo timer is supposed to make the engine run for a while after switching off the engine to allow the turbo to cool after a ong hard run.

The rear window mechanism probably needs lubrication, you can unclip the trim inside the tailgate, remove the screws from the metal cover, remove the plastic water barrier, then give the cogs a good dose of spray on grease (not WD40). Also give the rubber seals around the window a good clean then a dose of rubber lubricant.

Hope that helps a littel, I am sure you will probably get a lot of responses anyway that should help some more.

If there is soemthing serious with the engine and you bought it from a dealer then they must fix it within 3 months irrespective of whether there is a stated warranty.

    Cheers

          Hi Bazza,
Wouldn't like to comment on the speed 'power' probs as it could be so many things, like binding brakes and so on.But I do know that the pinging at 65mph is a speed bell which can be disconnected(see 'speed bell' on this forum to disconnect it).
Hope you get it all sorted coz there fantastic motors!!!!!

iv'e got a black box on my surf which i've been told is a turbo timer. havn't got a clue how to work it. it's got 2 buttons & an led display if anyones got any ideas how to work it?

my back windows sluggish as well, might do as suggested & lubricate it.

i've only just got my surf recently & found this site fantastic & useful, enjoy your surfing!!!!!!!

                Bazza,

I have my 1990 2.4TD 5 or 6 weeks now. I thought it was way down on power on my drive home the day I bought it, but my only reference vehicles were my 1.5 Corolla - nippy, and certainly faster than a Surf (but so it should be - it's a lot lighter), my Honda FireStorm (0-60 in 3.5 or so - 'nuff said. I do miss it but now I have a Surf instead ), or my 2.5TD Discovery which I had from November 1999 to September 2000 (a while ago, I'll admit, but my memory has the Disco with a snappier take-off low down).

I'm used to the Surf now. I can drive in a nippy fashion, if I push it, but the Surf doesn't like it, and it definitely uses more diesel driven like that.

Your perception of your Surf's performance may be coloured by residual memories of your last vehicle? Mine feels uncomfy over about 75mph or so. So I just don't bother.

I have replaced my old rusty exhaust with a new system from Milner Off Road, and that doesn't seem to have made any difference to the performance.

All my windows move down and up slowly. Guess that's just tired old motors. I might get to fix them someday. If you want to tackle your rear window, this might help... http://www.showmesome.info/hilux/workshop/rear_door.htm

                Good Luck with your Surf...
