  • Strange thingy-ma-bobs

Well I gave the Surf a nice new oil/oil filter change, brand new air filter and decided new headlight bulbs may be in order (mainly because one had blown!).

Anyway, after trying to do it the way the manual says (remove radiator grille etc) and failing I took advice from these sacred pages and achieved the bulb change by removing one battery and water reservoir at a time and then moving over to the other side.

The point of this post is that I found two odd random things that weren't connected to anything and (so far ) haven't stopped the vehicle from working.

Anybody with greater knowledge than me (most people I guess) that might be able to help me identify the items in case I need them would be gratefully appreciated.

The fuse like thing on the left I found underneath the windscreen washer fluid bottle on the drivers side and the other thing on the right with the holes in it was discovered on top of the passenger side headlamp unit between the grille and the front cross member.

Hopefully they are the broken and useless parts left over from someone else's careless maintenance job but just in case....

That's an old glowplug fuse on the left, and a vacuum valve (VSV) filter on the right.
The filter has probably been knocked off one of the solenoids, on or near the throttle body.

      Thanks Bushwhacker.

Now I know what they are I'll have a look and see if they are awol from where they should be!

Out of interest, how many of the VSV's should there be? I had a quick google and found a picture showing one of them near the air filter just as you said but couldn't see any more?

        5. Two on passenger side for the ADD. Two under manifold, one for EGR Valve and one for the Small Butterfly EGR operation. One on top of throttle for the Small Butterfly engine shutdown. None near air filter. That's the Turbo Pressure Sensor.
