  • 93 2.4 lte torque convertor

Well finally got round to removing the transmission ( lovely job ) first problem the torque convertor front spigot had sheared off in the crank ... looks like it had been like this for some time ..... lots of drilling spitting blood but finally got it out.
Right the easy bit swap mounts etc to replacement box (same serial numbers on box) fit torque convertor that was supplied with box from 93 surf and the damn thing will not engage no matter what I do, so i try the old tc and it mates up straight away 3 clunks and in position ? The splines are the same but like i said no matter what i do the replacement tc will not engage. I have read that some tc fitting requires the gearbox to be stood up vertical and this helps engagement which is great if the gearbox didnt weigh a ton!!!!

    Any advice appreciated

It is frustrating when they just won't go on, but give it a wiggle and slight left and right turns as you push and it will suddenly clunk into place.
If the T/C has been stored for a while, especially with no fluid in it, it can be a bitch to get all sets of splines to all line up.

Ok mate, thanks I will give it another go tomorrow. I am just a bit peed off that the old knackered one slips straight on ... typical.

Just a quick update ... tc is on .... with a little help from the handle of a lump hammer. After numerous hours twisting jiggling etc it would not go on [even stood the gearbox vertical and still no joy]
What I think had happened was at some time or other somebody has removed either the engine or gearbox without removing the flexplate bolts so the tc stayed with the engine and they probably had trouble putting them back together and slightly damaged and I mean slightly knocking the splines.
When I say I used a lump hammer it was only the handle on the tc centre support while turning and jiggling the tc. Once it was engaged in the first set of splines it went in the final sets by hand pressure only.
Now to get the gearbox back on .......

Well all back together and everything is fine but just one small problem, there is a slight weep of transmission fluid from around the transmission sump. The sump has been removed at sometime but the sealer looks a bit hit and miss.
Does anyone know if there is enough clearance to just drop the sump or has the exhaust/ anti rollbar have to be dropped ?

Answer is.... undo middle section of exhaust so the exhaust hangs down from the manifold end / undo the 4 front propshaft bolts / for easier access undo the 4 antirollbar bolts and allow this to drop down / remove sump
