  • 1992 Hilux Surf - Blown Engine

I need some advice as to whether to get a new engine or what alternatives may be on offer.

    Have it checked first.
You may have to have the Engine Head removed and send it to a machine shop and have a crack test.
Re-phasing or re-surfacing is also advisable only when the machine shop technician deems it necessary.
If you want to save money and if your original head can still be worked on by the machine shop then by all means go for it.
but all the decision is on you.
you can either get a new 2.4L(2L-TE) head or a rebuilt 2.4L(2L-TE) head.
Or even try your luck with the 2.8L(3L) head.

There is an article or thread somewhere about the following:
2.4L engine using a 2.8Liter (3L) Head. it said in the article that the 2.8Liter (3L) has better cooling, because the water passages are bigger but fits completely to the (2.4L )2L-TE engine.

also, there are hot swaps where you include your old head with your payment for their rebuilt head.

By the way, before considering to replace your blown engine, get a trustworthy technician and have the damage assessed and the cost assessed afterwards.

But if you have some money lying around to play with do what you want, if you want to replace it. If you should replace it then get a different engine, in that way you can have a new experience.

and have your blown engine (if repairable) sidelined and repaired in a slow pace so you have a back up should you need it when the time comes.
And plus you can play with mods on that back up engine, turn that beast into a long duration project Monster Engine.... etc etc.
