  • Transmission Fluid leak from bellhousing

Just when I thought it was industructable its starts ####ing out ATF. Was away for the long weekend here in Canada and hauled a small trailer through the mountains putting on just over 900km today. I've since dumped about 7 litres into the old surf. When sitting idling it just has a slow leak, so I'm guessing when driving it's a little faster.

I got under the vehicle and wiped down the bellhousing because I saw the fluid dripping off one of the bottom bolts. It looks like the gasket may be cracked allowing fluid to seep down through, or, the leak is up higher and traveling down the side of the bellhousing and dripping off the bolt.

I have never even looked at a transmission before! I took out my Max Ellery manual and thumbed through it, but I'm not quite sure where to start. Should I drain the pan out and attempt to replace this gasket? (Sounds wayyyy too simple). Is there anything I should know?

My father also recomended replacing the filter in the atf pan, anyone have any part numbers?

    Thanks.

Edit: Here's a quick photo I snapped. You can see the atf on the bolt on tbe left side getting ready to drip.

It'll be the first motion shaft oil seals. Best to do the crankshaft seal when you're at it.

It's a gearbox out job, at least 2 days if you're DIY or £1k+ (UK cost) to have it done by a specialist.
Do you know that, with a 50 character limit, it's

Assuming it takes about 5 days for any parts to get to me, I would have 4 evenings after work to get it done before the end of my shift. How long would you figure putting a new timing belt, camshaft seal and crankshaft seal would take? I know how long that took me to do, so it might give me a better idea of how long it will actually take me.

Thanks so much for your quick response.

I've done the belt and seals on a 2.4 in a very easy (many coffee, beer and food breaks) 6 hours.

Waiting on word for a quote from a shop... it took me prob 30 hours to do my belt and seals because I literally have no idea what I'm doing.
