  • Mystery Thud !

I have a 93 SSR-X in mint everything works well but have two problems. First seems to be a common one on these forums, that being Fuel Consumption. I am getting around 15-19 mph but that has been discussed before and I will do some research and see if I can match some of the symptoms with whats been said already. However I have noticed that it feels as if the O/D kicks in very soon after the top gear (within around 5-10mph) so it takes literally ages to get from around 40mph to 70mph (because its in O/D). Anyway my main concern is a thud coming from the gearbox. As I come to a halt I get this thud which can be heard and felt. It "thuds" just before the surf stops altogether and I sometimes get it just as I take my foot off the brake and on to the accelerator. I don't think the gear slips because the revs don't really change much. If the surf is on a flat surface and in Drive, I take my foot off the brake and let it roll, it get the thud after its rolled a few metres but it dosen't stop rolling, the gear remains engaged and it keeps rolling at idle.
Anyone come across anything similar and can anyone tell me where to start looking.

Just one more point on the mpg, can anyone put up a link pointing to an article about adjusting the fuel mixture ?

    Thanks

You might have a loose torque converter or flex plate, you need to crawl underneath and take the inspection cover of the bottem of the bellhousing, them see if you can move the torque converter by hand. Otherwise it could be wear in the transfer case, gearbox, torque converter.

As so check the UJ in the rear shaft, and the pinion flange on the diff.

Then check you wheels nuts! (maybe do that first...)

Something is loose, and its taking up the slack.

Mine is making this thud as well, will need to check this out, thanks guys. Is this a hard job, is it a job a novice could do. I'm not to good with mechanics but will need to learn.

No such luck for me ! I can actually feel the thud through the Gear lever, has to be something more serious I think.

                Thud!

Disconnect the rear propshaft flange and remove the grease nipple from the sliding spline. Pump the slider in and out a few times and re-build it. Give it a go, it worked for me and another 2 Surfs that had the same problem in my area.

                Good luck.

                  Thud

Mine has done for over a year (since I bought it) never got worse, all else is ok, let me know how you get on with the prop shaft trick, I have never greased the uj's so it can't be because of to much grease.
