  • Overheated- now gearbox and power problems

    Hi guys
I'm in Malawi doing community work at the moment. We have a 2.4 td hilux surf that has been off the road for a while to to a gearbox problem. Basically the cylinder head overheated really badly, so that was replaced for a new one.
After that job, the vehicle lacked power and would not change at the correct times ie it over revs, lots!

Anyone got ideas what the problem might be? things to check etc

    Many thanks
    Joe

Check all the vacuum hoses have been fitted correctly and aren't damaged.
Do you know that, with a 50 character limit, it's

      many thanks for the reply

Will check the hoses, the problem is, since loosing power it was in an accident so everything has been removed!
So before putting the engine and gb back in i'd like to know the likely problems

Is it possible that when the original cylinder head overheated, that the automatic gearbox oil also got overly hot, so subsequently overheated? (the same symptoms have happened on this and a Pajero that we have)
Apparently the gb oil was a dark colour
Please let me know if you have any insight whatsover

      thank you

Does the radiator also cool the transmission oil on this automatic box?

Just trying to think around the problem??

Correct, the tranny oil is directed through a cooler inside the bottom tank
          of the radiator.

If the tranny oil is dark in colour, or smells burnt, it needs to be changed.
It should be a nice cherry red colour.
          Still on a mission.

Is it therefore likely that when the CH overheated, the transmission oil also got too hot and damaged the GB? In which case, what damage is likely/is is a replacement GB required?

Also, is it the same system in the 4d56 1992 2.5td Pajero engine?

            Thanks

It's most likely just a change in ATF that's needed, rather than the gearbox as a whole. You might need a new radiator, have a good check of it.

Pajeros don't have engines, they run on hope.

no it hasnt. Both the surf and pajero have the exact same problem, so was hoping to ascertain whether it is the same source to the problem
                    thanks

Could the common denominator be the person that put them together?..:

The same problem does not mean the same fix as they are different cars.

                      Did you take Albanach advice???
                      .... Which was nice.

How did you change the tranny fluid?

If you just drained the sump, you have only changed about a third
of the total capacity, the rest stays in the gearbox and torque convertor.

If you do a search on here, there is another method some have used to
change it all, I've never tryed it myself.

Pajeros have seperate tranny cooler rads, independant of the engines
                        cooling system.
                        Still on a mission.

Also, did you check the level with the engine warm and running? It sounds like you don't have enough in there.
