  • thermostat and viscose fan needed due to cylinder head problems

    Looks like my cylinder head has gone on my 2.4 SSRx auto. I also need a new thermostat and a viscose fan/hose to help cool the engine. Does anyone know a good place to get the parts; and are they the same as a landcruiser or pick up? I live in North Staffs.

    stat and hoses can come from Milners, the viscous fan can be refilled if you've lost the oil from it. While you have it apart, you can adjust the temp it kicks in with the screws in slots on the hub, to get it to come on at a cooler temp, but you'll pay for it in slighly less MPG and its probably not worth the effort.

    If you need a whole new one, probably cheaper to get a Pacet or Kenlowe electric one instead.

      milners couldn't do the hose/coupling so I got all the parts from Pinkstones. Fingers crossed its not the head gasket again; that was replaced last year.

        Hi Peeps
        Getting There Slowly
        After my cracked head problems I decided engine cooling was a priority if further misery was to be avoided. The obvious first step was to ensure the new radiator was getting enough air to cool my nice new cylinder head. Some people have mentioned hearing their viscous fans roar when the temperature rose in hot weather. The fan fitted to the 2.4 td in my truck was just as free when hot as when cold and never was heard to make any noise at all. Mr Koi of slurry wading fame had already looked at the offending fan and said silicon oil was required. To this end three 50ml. bottles of silicon oil were purchased from GM Models, 15 Dunes Road, Greatstone, Kent, TN28 8SS.
        After stripping down and cleaning the old oil from the clutch, 50ml. of 3000wt silicon oil was poured into the lower half of the clutch. After peering at this miniscule amount of oil disappearing into the void another 50ml of 4000wt was poured in for luck.
        Everything back in place in the truck. Would the extra oil burst the coupling?
        The result of the extra oil is a low satisfying roar on tick over and a thunderous crescendo as the revs rise, marvellous!
        Hot air now can be now felt rushing out from under the running boards and the engine bay is definitely getting cooled down.
        Fuel consumption must be worse, but the noise from the fan ensures the right foot now has reason to be used a little more carefully. I don’t recommend my solution to a duff viscous fan for everyone but for low speed towing of a trailer it is working well for me.
