  • Fuel leak - mystery!

Noticed my MPG has been getting steadily worse of late, and when heading out today I noticed an oily patch where I had been parked and lots of spots where I'd been reversing. Left it running and took a look underneath, sure enough...diesel was dripping out of somewhere. Did a quick run for an errand then came back, got the overalls on and of course, cannot find the drip any more.

I've followed the fuel pipes going into the pump and out and nothing obvious. The fuel pump itself is slightly damp on the inner side (closest to engine) but the bottom of the head under the inlet manifold seems to look the most damp. As it's not too easy to see under there, does anyone know of any common areas for it to leak under there, so at least I can start tracing it down?

    fuel leak

sounds like injection pump rubber gaskets, lots of write ups just search, they are very cheap but awkward.
pump needs to come off for one rearward facing hope this helps

Yea I've looked all around the pump and would definitely say its not coming from the pump itself. The pump looks damp but mostly from oil and crud, the actual damp parts are under the manifold (higher than the pump), and for the amount it leaks it sure seems like a pipe or something.

Had a better poke around this today to track down the leak, and sure enough as was said before it's the pump

Sadly it doesn't seem to be the easy one on top, it looks like the seal between where the fuel pipes go out and the main body. Looks like there's a cap on the end held with allen bolts. So, looks like the pump has to come out which I was dreading.

Does anyone know if these seals from Milners are the correct ones, as it doesn't mention if its EFI or not...

if yours is a ln130 2.4 then yes but the rear one can be done in situe just take pipes off for ease or do cambelt overhall and renew all pump seals £££££££££££££ unless its due. sure there is a write up on rear seal, hope this helps and good luck

Had a look for the write up in question, and everything I find says don't attempt the rear seal (distribution block) as the pump will need calibrating. So, guess I'm now on the lookout for a replacement pump instead

I know of someone (on here I think) that replaced the rear o ring by removing one bolt at a time. I'm not recommending it as it's very risky doing it that way. Others have taken the pup out and held it upright in a vise to do this seal but again risky, as there's lots of bits in there to fall out or be knocked out of place. Must get an old pump one day and take a look at what's in them.

Theoretically (if you know what you're doing or are very lucky) it would be possible, as Nev said, to change that seal by loosening all 4 bolts, moving the valve block back a bit, cutting the old seal out and then replacing the new seal by removing one bolt at a time.

I'm confident enough to try it for a laugh, but I'd still get the pump checked afterwards.

My advice to the OP is to get it done by a specialist, there are a whole pile of things that can go wrong...
