  • Interesting recall response (relay rod)

Finally after chasing this up since August I have my official letter from Toyota offering the steering relay rod replacement. Curiously enough, it had an accompanying letter also stating "Under this campaign it is necessary to inspect/replace the cylinder head gasket"..."We would like to offer this preventative measure completely at our cost..."

So, looks like my 19 yr old surf will be seeing a new lease of life with lots of free repairs

I had the letters today, steering recall ( done a couple of weeks ago) and the inspect/replace the cylinder head gasket recall.
    All the best

Cool, did they just do a compression check or actually replace the HG?

Sorry not making myself clear, had the steering recall done a couple of weeks ago and got two letters from Toyota today. One for the steering recall ? and the other says it is necessary to inspect/replace the head gasket. Both letters are headed VOSA Department of transport and Toyota and signed by Roger Phipps, Warranty Manager, Toyota (GB). I don't think that the head gasket will be applicable as I replaced the head a couple of months ago.

The head gasket was a recall item in Japan and was in fact the original reason heads were failing. There was a period where they used a new type of gasket that was not up to the job and that was the reason for the recall. The gasket failed, caused excess pressure in the cooling system, pumped the coolant out and that is what caused the cracked heads. If the head has never been replaced, have the gasket done, but if it has then no point doing it as it will not have the faulty type gasket.

Are you just going to the Toyota dealership for this? Does this still apply even though I'm in Canada?

Cheers for the info Nev! Curious though, any way to know if the head has been replaced before? All receipts that came with the Surf are in Japanese, so have no idea what has and hasn't been done. I just wonder how Toyota will 'inspect' the HG, and what factors into them replacing it. I can only be sure it isn't faulty now, but the heating system does leave a lot to be desired!

If you look for a thread called 'Steering part snapped', there are some contact details in there for Toyota that should help you regardless of where you are.
