  • Steering very vague...2.4 SSR-X

Having replaced all of the top end on my Surf recently I would like to thank all those that helped me source parts, offered advice and generally helped me out over the last few weeks. It was the first time I had tackled a diesel. My usual forte is petrol engines, but it seemed to be a fairly straightforward job and its running as sweet as a nut. After checking for leaks and making a few minor adjustments here and these I took it for a test drive and its fantastic. Its like a new Surf now. I did the EGR pipe crimp off and no more smoke either.

I now need to turn my attention to the steering which is somewhat vague when driving. The symptoms are these:

When travelling along the road at around 40-50mph the steering is going in a straight line and no wandering. Then it just seems to wander of its own accord. The steering wheel seems to stay in the same position almost and doesnt pull off to one side when the car wanders.

When stationary on the ground and undertaking a steering rock from side to side...when the wheels actually start to move, the steering input is fairly normal in that the steering wheel is not having to be moved much to take up the slack in the steering box.

Its quite apparent when you come off the throttle after accelerating. Feels like joints somewhere, but without cracking them all off they look ok when rocking steering from side to side on the ground. Steering damper looks to be in fairly good order visually.

Has any one else experienced similar in your Surf ownerships? If so can you suggest a remedy please.

    Steering box play?
Any other steering joints that usually give trouble on the Surf.?

265/70/15's which I would guesstimate as half worn. Tyre edges arent worn, so tracking seems fine.

Thanks Thrifty. The wander is quite pronounced at speed. Less noticeable at slow speeds.

Check the steering idler for play .... you can either rebush it of replace it

Also look at the track rod ends for play and that the steering dampener is ok

If you need the drivers side track rod set up or a second hand dampener( Both only used for about a month before the engine died).... i think i have them in my garrage from my old k plate

Great. Let me know what you want for them. The Surf I have was purchased from a friend who cooked it right royally but the body and underside is in fantastic condition so I may just throw a little more money at it to get it dead right. Im assuming the track rod ends are fairly easy on the Surf? Pop the joint, unscrew, count turns off, refit new count turns on etc?

Great no problem. Yes to the tracking test. My method of replacement was just to get it To a tracking/alignment centre, in that it would hopefully run down the road in a fairly straightline .

You could take it for an early MOT for a confirmation of what's worn - unless its the damper ...
