  • Done to death I know... but Black Smoke

    Hi all,

Im fairly new to Surfs, and purchased a 2.4 2L Surf a few weeks ago and have been ironing out all its problems. Mainly, fitting a new head, injectors, oil and filter changes, fuel filters and air filters and a complete new cooling system including water pump etc. Its all back together a runs nicely but for the black smoke and occasional darkish gray smoke coming from the exhaust when idling or under hard throttle.

I know the topic of black smoke has been done to death on here, but my question relates to the EGR system on these vehicles. I have searched on here extensively for the EGR mod as everyone suggests, and short of going down the route of blanking the plates off to the piping, I want to first just try the cable tie option on the vac pipe. I cant find anywhere on here a photo of the exact pipe which needs to be blocked/tied/crimped off. Could someone please give a newbie Surf owner a pointer to a photo please or post a quick one up so I can try this mod.

I dont think its an injector issue as they were replaced when I did the head. If anyone can help I would appreciate it very bigly much.

On edit: I forgot to add its been sat for around two months prior to fitting new head etc but did smoke when it was running originally. Cylinder bores looked ok on examination and pistions looked fine to. Compression check reveals no mismatches.

It's best to blank the pipework though, the EGR may be stuck open.
Do you know that, with a 50 character limit, it's

Thanks, Im assuming thats just a question of making up the metal gaskets for the EGR pipe ?

WOW what a difference.!! I crimped mine off today and hardly any smoke at all. I would estimate a reduction of up to 80% in smoke from the rear. Hardly any on acceleration now and none at idle.

                Result!

So all you have to do is put the blanking plate in and cable tie pipe? Are there Any power gains?

I just crimped off the rubber vac pipe. Made a world of difference. You can go the whole hog though.
