Hi,
I recently changed the fuel filter and been having cold start problems when the truck has been standing over night.
After replacing the fuel filter (ten minute job) I used the small black primer/plunger to pump fuel (I naively did not fill the filter prior to putting on) I pumped for a while and felt it harden up (!) I was quite happy that I had filled the filter with the pump/plunger. I then pumped a few more times until it was really hard (see comments below).
I then started to experience early morning starting problems (after truck had sat for the night) it fires up fine every time normally just problems after a long stand (which sometime means jump starting it and cranking it for ages..)
I had the filter off again a few days later to investigate (fuel level was about 15mm below brim of filter). I suspect I may have broken the fuel plunger/primer by being over enthusiastic with my hand pumping see comment above. I think the primer/plunger may be broken as I tried to pump fuel from a small cup but the plunger would have none of it it sucked up fuel from the cup and then spat it back into the cup again not much pumping going on.
I assume the problems are due to fuel draining back into the tank, and the slack feel now in the plunger/primer means I cannot suck fuel into the filter to replace the trapped air in there. I tried to open up the plunger/primer but seems they are sealed units.
I have bought a cheapy check valve which I will put into the fuel line just BEFORE it enters the filter. I could of course buy a new plunger/primer but they are going for about £80
Anyone got any thoughts?
I got the truck 2 months ago and am totally into it, just wish it was a bit more reliable to start right now.
Thanks in advance
Greg
